Wesleyan Edged 1-0 by No. 14 Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's soccer team (6-6-3, 2-5-3) fell to No. 14 Connecticut College 1-0 in its regular-season finale on Tuesday afternoon. This was the 46th meeting between the Cardinals and the Camels (10-3-2, 6-2-2), as the last nine meetings were decided by one goal. With the loss, Wesleyan will wait to hear about its NESCAC tournament fate when games wrap up tomorrow, while Connecticut College has secured a spot in the tournament as they finish the regular season with an unblemished record at home (8-0).

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • With 16:27 expired, Wesleyan's Jake Lundberg had a chance to open the scoring, but his shot from the top of the 18 sailed just high.
  • The Camels got on the board at the 27:35 mark when Augie Djerdjaj used his head to redirect a cross from Freddy Stokes, making it 1-0.
  • Out of the intermission, the Cardinals had a great opportunity for the equalizer. Trevor Devanny sent a long ball down the right side to Mike Gallo, before Gallo beat a defender and sent a cross into the box. Matthew Rubinstein one-timed the cross, but Connecticut College goaltender A.J. Marcucci just got his left foot on the ball to deny the chance at the 48:16 mark.
  • The hosts looked to increase the lead at the 70:13 mark when Manny Balbontin rifled a shot from the right corner of the 18, but the ball went just wide right.
  • Neither team saw any quality opportunities to score in the final 19 minutes of play, as Connecticut College held on for the 1-0 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Liam Devanny made two saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Marcucci made one stop for the Camels.
