Geneseo Rallies Down the Stretch to Defeat Wesleyan, 72-60

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Wesleyan women's basketball team dropped a difficult non-conference game on Sunday to SUNY Geneseo in the Judy Pearson Memorial Tournament hosted by Babson, 72-60.

After some great back-and-forth action for more than three and a half quarters, the Knights pulled away late as they improved to 8-1 overall. Caleigh Ryan led the Cardinals with 14 points and Katy O'Connor posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds as they fell to 8-3 on the year. Ryan was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Geneseo scored the first four points but Wesleyan responded with a 7-0 run in less than a minute.
  • The first quarter went back-and-forth often with the largest lead a five-point advantage by the Cardinals following a 3-pointer from Ryan at the 3:52 mark.
  • Wesleyan led 17-15 after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • It was a similar story in the second quarter.
  • The Cardinals led by five, twice, matching the largest margin of the game to that point.
  • With 3:02 remaining, a pair of free throws by Marina Petruzzi put Wesleyan up 31-26.
  • Geneseo got within one with 48 seconds to play but Ava Tompkins hit one from deep shortly after to give the Cardinals a 34-30 halftime advantage.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Wesleyan struggled offensively early in the second half and was held scoreless for more than five minutes as Geneseo took a three-point lead at the 4:32 mark.
  • The Knights' lead was short-lived, however, as a 3-pointer by Emma Roush with 2:38 remaining put Wesleyan back on top, 40-39.
  • Down 45-41 following another try from Roush, Geneseo responded with four unanswered in the final minute but a buzzer-beater three from Maddie Clark gave the Cardinals a 48-46 lead entering the fourth.
  • After a layup by Sara Ciotti, Wesleyan responded with a 5-0 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Petruzzi at the 7:07 mark.
  • However, the Knights responded with eight unanswered to go up 56-53 with 3:57 on the clock.
  • The Cardinals quickly regained the lead following a layup from Ryan, but Geneseo closed out the game on a 16-3 run.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Wesleyan hit 10 3-pointers as a team with Tompkins and Roush hitting three each. Tompkins was 3-of-6 from downtown and Roush was 3-of-5. Roush recorded 10 points and tied a team-high for assists with three alongside Clark.
  • Ciotti led all players with 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting while Natalie Alfieri and Kerrin Montgomery each scored 17 and Lindsay Halpin dropped 12. Montgomery also pulled in a game-high 15 rebounds and Halpin dished out a game-high four assists.
  • Wesleyan held a 43-36 edge in rebounding. Geneseo's bench was outscored 15-2.

UP NEXT:

  • The Cardinals return to action on Friday, January 10 for their NESCAC-opener on the road against Tufts. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
