MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – After two first period goals, neither team scored again as the Wesleyan men's ice hockey team tied Little Three archrival Amherst in Spurrier-Synder Rink on Saturday afternoon, 1-1.
Cardinals' goaltender Tim Sestak stopped 46 shots as Wesleyan is now 9-8-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the NESCAC. With the tie, Amherst is 6-8-3 on the year and 4-6-2 in league play.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- It didn't take long for Amherst to get on the board. After winning the opening faceoff, Noah Gilreath fired a shot from the point and Joey Lupo, who was standing in front of the goal, tipped it in with a redirect just 14 seconds into the game.
- Just under 14 minutes later, Wesleyan evened the score. Spencer Fox sent it up from the red line to Tyler Watt, giving him a one-on-one opportunity with the goalie as he shot from the right side into the back of the net.
- Neither team would score again as they went into overtime.
- In the opening seconds of OT, with a player down, Walker Harris had a one-on-one opportunity to seal the win but Amherst goalie Giancarlo Ventre made the save to keep it scoreless.
- Shortly after, the Cardinals had another excellent chance on another one-on-one opportunity but once again, Ventre saved Drew Pitcher's attempt to keep the home team from winning.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sestak stopped 46 shots and is now 9-7-1 overall on the year.
- Ventre made 28 saves for the Mammoths and is 3-7-1 this season.
- Amherst held a 47-29 advantage in shots but went 0-for-5 on power plays.
