COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The fifth-ranked Wesleyan women's lacrosse team scored 10 unanswered goals to close out the game Monday night as the Cardinals defeated No. 15 Colorado College on the road, 18-7.
Ahead 7-5 at halftime, Wesleyan outscored the Tigers 11-2 in the final 30 minutes of action as it improved to 3-0 on the season. Abby Manning led the way with five goals. Avery Bell scored a team-high three goals for Colorado College but the loss dropped the Tigers to 2-1.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- Wesleyan scored the first goal of the game at the 26:48 mark as Sydney Prokupek found the back of the net on a free position shot. It was also a player-up advantage for the visitors.
- Colorado College responded with two unanswered goals to take a lead with 21:16 remaining. Bell scored the first goal while Bella Beattie tallied the second.
- From 18:53 to 6:26, the Cardinals scored five consecutive goals to go ahead 6-2. Manning scored three goals during the run, including two free position shots, while Prokupek and Julia Gretsky were responsible for the other two scores.
- In just under three minutes, the Tigers cut the deficit to one with a 3-0 stretch, receiving goals from three different players. However, with 1:06 on the clock, Kat Cucullo scored on a free position shot to give Wesleyan a 7-5 halftime lead.
- The home team came out strong in the second half as Bell found the back of the net just 41 seconds into play. After a goal by Manning, another score by Bell at the 27:55 mark cut the deficit to one, 8-7.
- However, it proved to be the final goal of the game for the Tigers as Wesleyan closed out the game on a 10-0 run. Eight different Cardinals scored during the run while Gretsky and Abbey Logan led the way with two goals apiece.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wesleyan held a 37-27 edge in ground balls, forced 29 turnovers, and outshot Colorado College 37-20. The Cardinals were also 9-14 on free position shots while the Tigers went 1-5.
- Allegra Grant made seven saves for Wesleyan.
- Alena Stern started between the posts for Colorado College and stopped 12 shots in 53:45.
