LEWISTON, Me. – The No. 18 ranked Wesleyan women's soccer team secured another win Saturday morning, defeating Bates 3-0, as they look to climb the national rankings and conference leaderboard. Wesleyan now moves to 8-1 (6-1 NESCAC), winning their second straight while Bates drops to 3-7-2 (1-6 NESCAC). The Cardinals continue their march to a conference championship, sitting second in the conference with a date with first place Hamilton a week from today.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- In a scoreless first half, there was still plenty of action. A physical first 45 minutes resulted in 13 total fouls between the teams including a yellow card for Wesleyan's Andrea Chiappetti '24 in the 16th minute
- The offense started to come alive in the second half for Wesleyan as they put in their first of three second half goals just two minutes from the start of the second half. The goal was thanks to a penalty kick by Lina Rodriguez '24, who turned the momentum the Cards' way for the rest of the game.
- For the next 15 minutes of match, it was constant scoring opportunities for the Cardinals. They recorded two corner kicks and six shots in that short span, the sixth shot ending up in the back of the net by virtue of a Julia Meehan '20, P'21 foot. She was set up on the play by Dani Milovanov '23 who recorded her first assist of the season. Meehan's shot was lofted from a tight angle on the right wing as the ball rose high in the air past a sprawling Bobcat goalkeeper in net.
- After a few more scoring chances over the next few minutes, Remi Feuerman '22 put the finishing touches on another Cardinals victory with her first goal of the year off an assist by Ally Stanton '24.
