SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – The Wesleyan men's soccer team was able to produce a goal in the final minutes of the contest to secure the win Wednesday night.
Matthew Rubinstein '23 came through for the Cardinals, beating the goalkeeper to extend Wesleyan's unbeaten streak to 10 games. Wesleyan is now 9-2-2, Springfield loses at home for the first time in five games, falling to 8-5.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Lucas Ruehlemann '25 opened up the match by having two shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, both of which were saved by the Springfield goalkeeper, Clayton Knibbs
- Springfield possibly had their best scoring opportunity of the night just minutes later when Aiden Casinghino broke through the Cardinals defense, before being turned away by Liam Devanny '23
- Wesleyan had another opportunity to end the half, as Zach Wheeler '25 ripped a corner kick into the box. The ball bounced around before being handled by the Springfield defense.
- The game turned physical in the second half, as five yellow cards were given out by the officials. There were three on Wesleyan and two on Springfield
- In the 85th minute, Matt Rubinstein was able to slip a shot low, past the keeper to win the game for the Cardinals. The shot came off an assist by Ruehlemann
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Lucas Ruehlemann has produced a point in six of his last seven games
- Liam Devanny completes his 7th clean sheet of the season, and his 13th of his career
- Matt Rubinstein scores his team leading 3rd goal of the year
- Wesleyan and Springfield were even in total shots 8-8, however, Springfield had the edge in shots on goal 6-3
