Men’s Hockey Hands Conn. College 5-1 Defeat

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's hockey team exacted some revenge on Saturday afternoon in a 5-1 victory over Conn. College, avenging a season sweep at the hands of the Camels in 2019-20. Wesleyan improves to 1-0-1 on the season while Conn. College drops to 0-2.

Wesleyan's five goals are the most scored against a NESCAC opponent in a regular season matchup since a 5-3 home win over Tufts on Nov. 15 (18 games ago). Colin Cobb '23 was the primary weapon for the Cardinals as he tallied three points (two goals, one assist), easily establishing a new career-high in the process. Other goal scorers on the day for Wesleyan included Kyle Anderson '24, Matt Zandi '21, G'22 and Tiger Bjornlund '24. Erik Voloshin '24 picked up his first career win in his first career start, recording 19 saves on 20 shots.

The Cardinals put the Camels in a 2-0 hole with goals coming just 27 seconds apart in the first period. The first strike came from Kyle Anderson '24 who scored in his first career game on the power play off a feed from Cobb just 5:43 into play. Zandi then followed with a rifle from the point as Wiggle Kerbrat '23 fed Emmet Powell '23 at the point who dished to his D-partner Zandi for the goal to make it 2-0 Cardinals.

Wesleyan added to their lead in the second period as Cobb scored his first of two for the night as Go Uemura '23 factored on the assist to build the Cardinal advantage up to 3-0.

Conn. College struck back with a goal from Will Winship more than midway through the third period but the Cardinals quickly snuffed out any hope at a comeback as Cobb netted his second of the night followed by an insurance marker via Tiger Bjornlund '24 who netted his first career goal that made it 5-1 with 1:44 remaining.

In all, eight different Cardinals recorded a point while Rob Dysart '22 tallied two blocked shots to lead all skaters. Voloshin was tested in the second period where he made 10 of his 19 saves in that frame alone. The Cardinals went 1-for-5 on the power play while holding Conn. College to an 0-for-2 showing.

Next up for Wesleyan is a mid-week non-conference tilt at Endicott as the two sides will square off at 7 PM in Beverly, Massachusetts.
