Women’s Lacrosse Drops Road Game to Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. – On Sunday afternoon, Hamilton women's lacrosse defeated 10th-ranked Wesleyan to split the home-and-home weekend series as the Continentals won 17-9.

Laura Baine was excellent for the Cardinals (1-2, 1-1 NESCAC), scoring four goals, while Johanna Copeland and Kat Cucullo each added two and Gil Horst totaled two points on one goal and one assist. Hamilton (1-1, 1-1) received four goals and one assist each from Eva Abel and Courtney Spierre, while Tessa Ryan added five points on three goals and two assists, and Honor Gabriel totaled four points on two goals and two assists.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The Cardinals opened the game on a 2-0 run with goals from Copeland and Cucullo, respectively. However, the home team rallied with a 5-0 run over a nine-minute span. Spierre scored two goals during the stretch.
  • Wesleyan cut the deficit to one shortly after with back-to-back free position goals from Baine and Copeland.
  • In the final 6:48 of the half, the two teams exchanged goals as the Continentals entered the break with a one-goal advantage, up 6-5.
  • The second half was a different story. Wesleyan evened the score three times in the opening minutes, but with the game tied at 8-8, the home team went on a 9-1 run to close out the game. Eva Abel scored four goals during the stretch.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Emma Wilson recorded a team-high three ground balls for the Cardinals while Rylee White and Indigo Pellegrini de Paur each won four draws. Defensively, Pellegrini de Paur and Francesca Li caused two turnovers each and Abby Wolk recorded 12 saves in 30 minutes of action.
  • Meaghan Parlee had a game-high four ground balls for Hamilton and Meghan Lane led all players with six draw controls. Alyssa Bonanno caused four turnovers and Maeve Luparello stopped five shots in 30 minutes between the posts.
  • Hamilton held a 40-26 edge in shots and 21-16 advantage in ground balls. Both teams won 14 draw controls and had four free position shots each.

  • Wesleyan is scheduled to play at Trinity next Sunday, April 18 at a game time to be determined.
