Wesleyan Falls to No. 2 Tufts in Home-Opener

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The 16th-ranked Wesleyan men's lacrosse team hosted No. 2 Tufts Sunday afternoon on Citrin Field, and were defeated by the Jumbos 27-11.

The Cardinals (1-1, 1-0 NESCAC) were led by Jake Sexton's four goals while Shayne Gallagher added four points on two goals and two assists. Matt Treiber led Tufts (3-0, 2-0) with five goals, Max Waldbaum added three goals and two assists, and Mac Bredhal had two goals and three assists.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Ben Shapiro won the opening faceoff for Wesleyan and drove down the field, dishing it off to Jake Sexton for a quick score just six seconds into the game. However, the visitors answered with a 5-0 rally and never looked back.
  • Tufts outscored the Cardinals 11-2 the rest of the first quarter with two goals from Bredal and Treiber each. In total, nine players scored for the Jumbos during the run.
  • Down 11-3 after the first, Wesleyan was unable to mount a significant rally to keep the game within reach as Tufts continued to pull away.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Jumbos held a commanding 70-41 edge in shots and won 26-of-42 faceoffs.
  • Ronan Jacoby added two goals for the Cardinals while Matt Chase, Pat Grahling, and Alex Moynihan all found the back of the net. Shapiro won 14 faceoffs and recorded a team-high nine groundballs, while Brendan Keane caused two turnovers.
  • Fifteen players scored for Tufts. Kyle Helfrich led the team with eight groundballs and Kurt Bruun caused three turnovers.
UP NEXT:
  • The Cardinals are scheduled to host Little Three rival Williams on Saturday, April 24 at 3 p.m.
