MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Even with changes made throughout the Cardinal lineup, the No. 2 Wesleyan women's tennis team made quick work of Hamilton in a 9-0 sweep on Sunday afternoon. Wesleyan (4-0, 3-0 NESCAC West) remains undefeated with just one regular season match remaining while Hamilton (0-3, 0-2 NESCAC West) remains winless.
Prior to the match, Wesleyan took a moment to honor its three-member senior class as
Polina Kiseleva '21,
Alissa Nakamoto '21 and
Daniela Alvarez '21 were all celebrated before the start of play. Kiseleva won in both doubles and singles, moving to 8-0 overall in the 2021 season, while Nakamoto and Alvarez both factored in doubles victories as each played in their first match of the season.
NOTES
- In what was the most closely-contested doubles match Wesleyan has played all season, Venia Yeung '22 and Kiseleva were locked in a back-and-forth battle at No. 1 with Lauren Holtzman and Claire Cutler as the score was tied 7-7 heading into a tiebreak that went all the way to 11-9 before the Cardinal tandem came out on top
- Caitlin Goldberg '23 paired with the senior Nakamoto for a convincing 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles while Alvarez teamed up with Alexis Almy '22 and made quick work at No. 3 with an 8-1 triumph
- Even with three new Cardinals competing in the singles lineup for the first time in 2021, Wesleyan made quick work in all six matches as all but one match saw the Continentals win just three or fewer games
- Moving up to No. 3, Serim Jin '23 kept her singles record unblemished at 4-0 this season with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Cutler
- Katie Fleischman '23 made the most of her first appearance at No. 1 this season as she defeated Holtzman 6-1, 6-1 to win her third straight singles match
- Kiseleva doubled up with her second victory on the day, defeating Ajla Karabegovic at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-1 win
- A mainstay in doubles play this season, Megan Tran '22 played singles for the first time in 2021 and certainly left an impression as she toppled Grace Fuss by a score of 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4
- Sasha Gaeth '23 (pictured at the top) won her first career singles dual match as she topped Becca Ingber 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5 while Kriti Williams '24 won her first career match as the first-year took down Lorelei Glidden 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 to seal the Wesleyan sweep
