MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – A few more clutch hits and the outcome could have been very different for Wesleyan softball as the Cardinals left 10 runners on-base in a 12-5 loss at Middlebury on Sunday afternoon. Wesleyan (1-7) still managed 12 hits on the day, giving the Cardinals an impressive 35 in the three-game weekend series against the Panthers (3-5).
Highlights
- The top of the Wesleyan lineup continued its hot streak as Courtney Collins-Pisano '22, Hannah Docktor '24 and Sophia Sciarappa '22 all singled to lead off the game, with Sciarappa's base hit through the right side scoring Collins-Pisano from second
- With two runners in scoring position and no one out, Middlebury did well to get out of the inning as just one run came across as the Cardinals seized a 2-0 lead
- In Middlebury's first at-bats, it was Abby Santis who came through with a two-run, two-out single up the middle that tied the score
- After taking a 3-2 lead in the second, Middlebury added to their advantage in the third as three runs came across to make it 6-2 Panthers
- Wesleyan got back into the game in the fifth as Collins-Pisano singled while Docktor doubled to center to open the inning. Sciarappa then drove in Docktor with a double to center and Ciara Castillo '23 later came through with an RBI single that made it 6-5. With three runs in, two runners still on and no one out, Wesleyan had an opportunity to retake the lead but a groundout and inning-ending double play followed as Middlebury escaped once again
- That momentum carried over into the bottom of the fifth as the Panthers scored two to claim a three-run lead
- Trailing by three, Wesleyan loaded the bases in the sixth but left all three stranded as a groundout to third wiped away the scoring threat
- Middlebury added some insurance with a four-run six, Tori Papaleo got things going with a two-run double to left, later followed by a Sophie Bolinger RBI single that made it 12-5 Panthers
