MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's lacrosse team defeated in-state NESCAC rival Trinity in its 2021 regular season finale on Citrin Field Sunday, 16-12.
Ronan Jacoby scored five goals for the Cardinals (2-2, 2-1 NESCAC West Division) to lead all players while
Jake Sexton added three, and
Matt Chase,
Shayne Gallagher, and
Sean Penney all scored twice. Sexton also dished out two assists to finish with five points. The Bantams (3-2, 1-2 NESCAC West) were led by Jack Cahill, Drew Kozub, Connor Mcculloch, and Jackson Wood with two goals apiece.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- Wesleyan got on the board early when Gallagher connected with a streaking Sexton in the middle of the field, with no one around, as he fired one into the top right corner at the 13:02 mark.
- Just under four minutes later, Penney caused a turnover on the defensive side, grabbed the ground ball, and then connected offensively as he scored unassisted to extend the lead to two.
- After another Wesleyan goal 38 seconds later to go up three, the Bantams snapped the run at the 8:21 mark with an unassisted marker from Harrison Ike.
- After some back-and-forth action, the Cardinals scored three unanswered to lead 7-2 after the first quarter.
- For much of the second, the two teams exchanged goals until a 2-0 run by the home team, with goals from Kevin Moriarty and Penney, put Wesleyan up 11-5 at the break.
- Trinity opened the second half with a 2-0 run to get within four, but that proved to be the closest the visitors would get the rest of the way.
- The Cardinals led 13-7 entering the fourth and were able to hold off the Bantams who got within four with 5:30 to play in regulation.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Despite the loss, Trinity outshot Wesleyan 59-39 but came up empty on extra man opportunities (0-for-5) while Max Powers saved 21 shots in net for the Cardinals.
- In addition to Powers' great play between the posts, the Wesleyan defense also caused 10 turnovers led by Penney, Nick Daly, and Sam Lefante with two each.
- Trinity's defense caused just three turnovers with one apiece from Cooper Yaccino, Seamus Johnston, and Tucker Sheehan. Dane Crowley won 18 of 28 faceoffs and recorded 12 ground balls
