Diana Schwarz Nets Field Hockey’s First Hat Trick since 2012 in a 7-1 Win over Mount Holyoke

Wesleyan finishes with their highest single-game goal total since 2011

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – It was quite the night for the Wesleyan field hockey team as thunder delayed the start of Wednesday night's contest for over an hour but when the two sides hit the turf, it was all Cardinals as the visitors took down Mount Holyoke, 7-1.

Wesleyan's seven goals are the most scored in a game by the Cardinals since a 7-1 win over Bates on Oct. 8, 2011 (127 games ago) while Diana Schwarz '23 finished with three goals and an assist, recording the first Wesleyan hat trick since Averill Roberto '13 scored four at Bates on Oct. 6, 2012. In the Cardinals' two victories over Western New England and Mount Holyoke, Wesleyan has outscored their opponents 13-2.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The goal-scoring frenzy opened early for Wesleyan as 5:10 into the game, Kenzie Kelly '25 netted her first career goal as Colleen Carrigan '22 fed the first-year at the far post. Kelly shielded off the Mount Holyoke defender and poked home the goal to put Wesleyan out front
  • Just 2:20 later, Helen Deretchin '25 got involved with her first career tally. Carrying just into the circle on the left wing, Deretchin wound up and rifled a backhand shot that zipped past the Lyons goalkeeper Leah Manning
  • Midway through the second quarter, Schwarz stick handled along the right wing and fired a pass to Ava Galdenzi '24 right in front of Manning and the sophomore calmly slid her shot past the scrambling keeper for yet another first career Cardinal goal as Wesleyan led 3-0
  • A sensational goal followed just over five minutes later as Olivia Baglieri '22 ripped a pass into the circle that Annabel Cincotta '25 landed her stick on. The contact with Cincotta's stick sent the ball deflecting into the upper corner of the cage and in for a highlight-reel fourth Cardinal goal (also another first career tally)
  • A fifth unanswered Wesleyan goal, and first of the night from Schwarz, came at the 35:10 mark as Baglieri spotted Schwarz open right in front of goal. As the pass came in, Schwarz had her back to the keeper and managed to work her way into a good angle as her shot rose off the tuft, fooling the keeper, and finding the back of the cage
  • Margaret Robb broke the Wesleyan shutout attempt just a few minutes later as she took a feed from Phoebe Aaronson and scored to make it 5-1 Wesleyan
  • Even with the Mount Holyoke answer, nothing was deterring the Cardinals tonight as Schwarz scored again, this time corralling a pass from Myla Stovall '22 and working the ball onto her backhand and firing in a shot inside the left post
  • Schwarz then completed her hat trick just 32 seconds into the fourth quarter as a blocked Cardinal shot deflected to the junior on the right wing. Schwarz was given time as the Lyon defense scrambled to get out to defend the shot attempt but it was all for not as the junior lifted her shot off the turf again, finding the back of the cage
