WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Wesleyan field hockey had its fair share of chances but couldn't grab one late as the Ephs clipped the Cardinals in a 2-1 decision on Saturday afternoon from Williamson Field. Wesleyan is now 2-2 (0-2 NESCAC) on the season while Williams improves to 4-1 (1-1 NESCAC).
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Dani Dittmann '22 proved vital at the last line of defense in the early going, stopping a few breakaway opportunities for the Ephs in the opening stages
- Williams, however, was first to pounce as with 3:10 left in the first quarter, Shea van den Broek scored into the top right corner of the cage off a penalty corner as the Ephs grabbed the 1-0 advantage
- The Cardinals didn't take much time to respond, however, as Ava Galdenzi '24 pounced on a loose ball in front of the cage as Williams goalkeeper Carson Stephenson was pulled out of her cage to try and kick the ball away. This left her out of position and when the ball landed on Galdenzi's stick, the sophomore made no mistake
- Just under 10 minutes later, the turning point came on another corner, this time one for Williams as Jacqui Sandor sent a pass to Catherine Torres who lined up a set shot that split the defenders for the second goal of the half
- The second half featured very little in front of each cage as the two sides combined for just five total shot attempts in the final 30 minutes. Diana Schwarz '23 tried her best to initiate offense with her speed but she was met by the Eph midfield and back line time and time again throughout the half
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Galdenzi's goal was her second of the season, becoming the third Cardinal to score 2+ goals through four games in 2021
- Grace Kohn '22 led the Cardinals with two shots on-target for the game
- Caitlin Grant '22 posted a career-high six saves in the cage over 60 minutes of action
- Williams outshot the Cardinals 13-5 (9-4 in shots on-target) while Wesleyan racked up a 5-3 edge in penalty corners
