Women’s Hockey Can’t Complete Comeback Against SUNY Cortland, Fall 2-1

MIDDLETOWN, CT- Women's hockey can't complete comeback against SUNY Courtland, fall 2-1. Wesleyan found themselves down by two goals midway through the 2nd period, before Brooke Keough '23 found the back of the net to trim the lead to one with just over six minutes remaining. The Cardinals were able to create a multitude of shots and scoring chances in the final minutes, but couldn't find the equalizer. After a 6-0 start that was the best in program history, the Cards have dropped their last four to drop to 6-4 (2-3). With the win, SUNY Cortland continues their impressive start to the season at 12-3.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • After a Grace Schnorr shot was turned away by Ryann Busillo '24, Amanda Gaffney found the rebound and scored to give SUNY Cortland a 1st period lead. Later in the 1st, Cortland had a golden opportunity for an early insurance goal when Elena Eichmann was on a breakaway. Jenna Stevens '24 raced back and made a diving play to take the puck away
  • Wesleyan applied immense pressure late in the first period, ripping seven shots in a three-minute span, but was unable to tie the game
  •  After a relatively quiet beginning to the 2nd period, SUNY Cortland found themselves on a 2 on 1 fast break. Dany Donegan found Emily Kromer who took a shot from the right side. The shot was turned away but Donegan followed and put through goal number two
  • After clean play through the first two periods, there were three total penalties in the 3rd giving each team great scoring opportunities. Wesleyan went on the power play less than a minute into the period producing nine shots in the two minutes, but none were able to get through the Red Dragons' keeper
  • The Red Dragons then had their power play chance, which included a five on three for 45 seconds. They were able to get a few shots off, however the Cards defense held strong
  • Wesleyan finally was able to score their first goal of the contest off a faceoff win by Chiara Christie '23. Isabella Allieri '25 riped a slapshot that Brooke Keough was able to deflect past the Cortland goalie
  • Wesleyan would put a ton of pressure on the Red Dragons defense in the final minutes, including pulling their goalie for the final minute of the game. However, the five shots in the last two minutes were all turned away by the Red Dragons
