MIDDLETOWN, CT – Women's hockey comes up short against Amherst Monday night, 2-1. After Amherst gained a 2-0 lead over the first two periods, Wesleyan was able to salvage a 3
rd period goal with less than two minutes left to cut the lead to one. The Cardinals would not be able to score again, as Amherst held onto their 2-1 lead. Wesleyan drops their 8
th straight game, falling to 6-8 (2-7 NESCAC), while Amherst improves to 7-7 (4-5 NESCAC)
HIGHLIGHTS:
- The first 10 minutes of the 1st period were relatively quiet, with neither team producing many shots. The puck was controlled for long periods of time by both Wesleyan and Amherst as the game stayed deadlocked at zero
- Caroline Jenkins '23 got called for holding late in the 1st period giving Amherst their first power play of the night. They capitalized in the early minutes of the power play off a rebound, as Avery Flynn cleaned up the original shot from Rylee Glennon
- Amherst came through again on their 2nd power play opportunity when Flynn scored her 2nd goal of the night on a slapshot with traffic in front of the net. She was set up again by Glennon and Leslie Schwartz
- Late in the 3rd Wesleyan put the pressure on, pulling the goalie with just under three minutes to play. They got numerous shots off before Effie Tournas '25 cleaned it up with the Cardinals first goal of the contest. They continued to play with six skaters for the final minute and half manufacturing four more shots, but the Mammoths defense held strong
