Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women’s Hockey Defeated by Amherst, 2-0

MIDDLETOWN, CT- Women's hockey was defeated by Amherst Tuesday night, 2-0. This is their 2nd loss to Amherst in as many days, and their 9th loss in a row after starting 6-0. Wesleyan was able to outshoot the Mammoths 27-22, including outshooting them 10-5 in the 2nd period, but could not come away with any goals. Wesleyan drops to 6-9 (2-8 NESCAC), while Amherst improves to 8-7 (5-5 NESCAC).
 
HIGHLIGHTS:
  • After four shots in the first two minutes for Wesleyan, it was Amherst who scored on their first shot of the contest. Alyssa Xu connected on a close range shot to beat Rei Halloran '23 to put the Mammoths up by a goal just over two minutes into the contest
  • A few minutes later, Amherst went on their first of five power plays on the day. They recorded three shots that were all turned away, before Sam DeLeo '25 stole the puck and went the other way on a shorthanded breakaway. DeLeo couldn't beat Caitlin Walker who made one of her 27 saves on the afternoon
  • Each team had two power play opportunities in the 2nd, but neither were able to capitalize. Wesleyan produced four shots on those two power play chances, while Amherst failed to produce a shot
  • Wesleyan pulled the goalie with three minutes remaining in the game in a last ditch effort to put through the equalizer. They only managed two shots in those final three minutes with an extra skater on the ice.
  • Amherst's Kate Pohl tried scoring from beyond the blue line into the empty net, but had her shot blocked by DeLeo. Angelina Wiater picked up the rebound and sent it into the empty net with less than a minute remaining to secure the Mammoths victory
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • There were seven total power plays (five for Amherst and two for Wesleyan)
  • Rei Halloran made 20 saves, her 4th straight game with at least 20 saves
  • Sam DeLeo was all over the ice, leading the team in shots and blocked shots
 
UP NEXT:
Wesleyan will return to Spurrier-Snyder Rink February 4th and 5th where they will take on Williams.
