No. 12 Volleyball Continues to Roll, Defeating Conn. College 3-0

Cards (15-1, 7-0 NESCAC) off to their best start to a season since 2017

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Back on the road for the start of three straight away matches in three days, the No. 12 ranked Wesleyan volleyball team swept Connecticut College, 25-13, 25-18, 25-16, to continue a stellar start to the season. The Cardinals are now 15-1, winners of six straight matches, and move to 7-0 in NESCAC play. The Camels fall to 6-9 overall and 1-7 in NESCAC play. 

As a team Wesleyan hit .263, earning a total of 39 kills. Leading the charge was Sophia Lindus '26 with 11 kills, hitting .323, followed by Kathryn Morton '24 and Bella Ahearn '23 with nine kills each, hitting .333 and .300, respectively. Michelle Jorba '25 added six kills at .222 clip. Totaling 13 blocks as a team, Zoe Swift '25 earned four blocks, matching a career-high, followed by Morton and Jorba who each recorded three. 

Wesleyan totaled 39 digs and 13 blocks. Bianca Ortiz '24 led with 10 digs followed by Jenna Otaola '22 and Lindus with eight each. Grace Dennis '23 totaled 29 of the team's 34 assists for the match. The Cardinals tallied five aces, three of which were scored by Lindus. 

As a team, Conn hit .088 with 26 kills and 18 errors. Leading the Camel offense was Riley Lord with seven kills and 11 digs. 

The Cardinals took control early on in the first set with a 9-3 run with kills from Ahearn, Morton, Jorba, and Lindus.  Wesleyan's offense was firing on all cylinders, hitting .520 in the first set, while Lindus led the way with four kills in the opening set.

The second set was a little closer thanks to a service run by Riley Lord. The Camels came back from a three-point deficit to tie the score 9-9. However, the Cardinals took the elad for good at 11-10 on a service error, and quickly built hte margin to 18-12 following consecutive Lindus kills. Ahearn later provided her fifth kill of the set as Wesleyan went up 2-0 in the match.

The final set featured six ties and three lead changes as the Camels hung tough. With the score 10-10, the Cardinals responded with four straight points to seize control, forcing a Camel timeout. Lindus came back with a kill out of the break to make it 15-10, and the Cardinals won 10 of the final 15 points to secure the win.

The Cardinals next head to Endicott for a Friday night showdown with the Gulls. The two sides met last season in Middletown, with Wesleyan coming out on top in a 3-1 win (25-22, 25-17, 27-29, 25-19).
