BRUNSWICK, ME. – Wesleyan field hockey suffers a 5-1 loss to nationally ranked Bowdoin Saturday morning. The Polar Bears controlled the game, scoring a goal per quarter through the first three periods, before putting two through in the final frame. Wesleyan played better as the game went on, outshooting the Polar Bears 10-8 in the second half but it didn't result in a closer final score. The loss for Wesleyan drops them to 4-10 (1-8 NESCAC) with one game remaining. Bowdoin picks up a win on their Senior Day, improving to 10-4 (5-4 NESCAC) as they continue to fight for a higher position for the conference tournament.
Bowdoin has had Wesleyan's number over the last few years, taking the last 12 contests including Saturday morning's game. Overall, the Cardinals post a 9-37 record against the Polar Bears. Bowdoin has been especially stingy at home, holding a 21-3 mark in 24 games against the Cards.
Wesleyan opened with an early scoring chance,
Diana Schwarz '23 stealing the ball away in Polar Bear territory before carrying it through their defense and ripping a backhanded shot that was turned away. Sophia Rosati and the Polar Bears created a scoring chance of their own a few minutes later, when she carried the ball from one end to the other before ripping a shot that snuck by
Audrey Pace '26 to give Bowdoin an early lead.
The Polar Bears controlled the second quarter as well, holding the Cardinals without a shot while adding another goal to their total. They would head into the half up two scores. In the third quarter Wesleyan fought back, producing six shots to the Polar Bears three however it was Bowdoin who was able to add another score. This time it was Jill Cloonan, for one of her two goals on the day, extending the lead to three goals.
In the fourth, Wesleyan managed their only goal. Schwarz redirected a shot from
Imani Ochieng '25 off a corner. Ochieng and
Helen Deretchin '25 executed a give-and -go, with the Ochieng shot tapped in by Schwarz. Bowdoin added two more goals earlier in the period reaching the final score of 5-1.
Schwarz puts through her team-leading 10
th goal of the season, which currently ranks 4
th in the NESCAC. Ochieng adds her 3
rd assist of 2022. Wesleyan was outshot by Bowdoin 15-11 (12-8 SOG). Pace makes seven saves.
Wesleyan will end the regular season with a NESCAC game against Connecticut College on the road on Tuesday, October 25
th.
