MIDDLETOWN, CT.- Wesleyan men's swimming and diving opened the 2022-23 season with a home tri-meet against Wheaton and nationally ranked Bates at Webster Family Natatorium. Wesleyan had six first place finishes from four different Cardinal competitors. The Cards also had a handful of 2
nd and 3
rd place finishers in their respective events
, but as a team they were defeated by both No. 14 Bates (177-114) and Wheaton (148-143) to start the season 0-2.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Two of Wesleyan's six first place finishes came thanks to Mason Polaner '24 who took first place in the 1000 yard free (10:14.43) and 500 yard free (4:54.23) both by over a second. He also competed in the 200-yard free, placing 2nd with a time of 1:47.09
- Harrison Hong '25 had three top three finishes on Saturday including a first-place finish in the 100 yard fly (51.53). His other two top three finishes came in the 100 yard back (52.85) where he came in 2nd and the 200 yard back (2:00.06) where he claimed third
- Eric Tran '23 had an impressive showing, taking first in the 200-yard fly by over two seconds (1:55.50). Tran also finished second in the 500-meter free (4:56.09) and 5th in the 200 yard IM (2:03.14)
- Jake Rybczyk '24 took 1st in both the one (233.90) and three meter dive (220.05) by a wide margin
- Jacob Lafferty '23 was stellar in both of his events, placing 3rd in the 200 yard IM (2:02.31) and 4th in the 200 yard back (2:02.19)
- Some other top four finishes on the day came from: Ryan Kobayashi '25 who came in 3rd in the 200 yard free (2:01.48), Daniel Isman '26 coming in 4th in the 200 yard breast (2:17.85), Fred Li '25 taking 4th in the 100 yard fly (53.60) and Richard Ettinger '23 finishing 4th in the 200 yard IM (2:02.41)
