Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women’s Hockey Downs Castleton on the Road, 2-1

Wesleyan has won four straight games

CASTLETON, VT.- The Wesleyan women's hockey team downed Castleton in a non-conference road game Tuesday evening. The Cardinals got out to a first period lead, eventually extending it to two with five minutes to go in the game off a Chiara Christie '23 goal. The Cardinals and goalie, Rei Halloran '23 was closing in on yet another shutout before the Spartans were able to net one off a rebound with 1.3 seconds left on the clock. This would have been Halloran's fourth straight shutout, which would have been a Wesleyan women's hockey record. The Cardinals still came out with their 4th straight victory, improving their early-season record to 4-1. The Castleton Spartans drop their second straight game to fall to 4-4.

The Cardinals came to play in their first non-conference road game of the season. Wesleyan opened with the first six shots on goal of the game, holding Castleton without a shot attempt for the first eight minutes. Wesleyan then had a power play chance midway through the period, but this time it was the Spartans turn to hold the Cardinals without a shot. Wesleyan immediately had another two-minute power play, and this time they capitalized. Brooke Keough '23 carried the puck across both blue lines, made a quick move to beat one defender before sneaking it past Castleton's Izabella Segui for the first goal of the contest. The puck slowly crawled through the five-hole, crossing the line right before a Spartans' defender could get to it. Keough had another great scoring chance in the final two minutes of the 1st period, but after weaving through the defense her shot was turned away by Segui.

The Cardinals dominated the shots on goal statistic again in the 2nd period, 10-2, however the 2nd 20 minutes ended scoreless. Both teams had early power play chances in the period, but the defenses held the offenses without a shot on goal. Wesleyan created another power play chance with four minutes to go, but both of their shots were turned back, holding the Wesleyan lead at one going into the final period.

The third period was the most even in terms of shots and shots on goal. Castleton got an early scoring chance off of a Wesleyan penalty just five minutes into the period. They managed three shots on goal during the power play, but Halloran was there to maintain the Cardinals one-goal advantage. The teams would then take turns going on power plays with five third-period penalties, including a 10-minute major. The Cardinals capitalized on their 2nd power play goal of the game with just over four minutes to go. The insurance goal was scored by Christie, who took a pass from Jenna Stevens '24 who worked her way into the slot before dishing to Christie on her right. Wesleyan's defense was stellar over the next three minutes looking at another shutout, but a late penalty allowed the Spartans to net one with just 1.3 seconds left to spoil what would have been a record-setting shutout.

Wesleyan wins their 4th straight game. Rei Halloran continues her impressive start to the season, making 13 saves and coming just over a second away from her 4th straight shutout. Wesleyan had 33 shots on goal to Castleton's 13. Keough and Christie add a goal and assist each, while Stevens manages two assists to now lead the team with three on the season.

Wesleyan will be back on the ice Saturday, December 3rd where they will travel to face Endicott in a non-conference contest.
