CLINTON, N.Y. – Despite two goals from
Effie Tournas '25, the Wesleyan women's ice hockey team was unable to shake off a 2-0 first period deficit in a 5-2 loss to Hamilton on Friday night. Wesleyan (7-11, 3-10 NESCAC) look to salvage a weekend split on Saturday against the Continentals (9-8, 6-7 NESCAC) who snapped a four-game losing streak with tonight's win.
It was Hyla Mosher who provided the heroics for Hamilton as she scored both goals in the opening period. The first coming over nine minutes into the stanza and the last coming with just 10.8 seconds left as she beat the buzzer to make it 2-0 Hamilton heading into the second.
Wesleyan found their footing with a goal coming off the stick of
Effie Tournas.
Christina Tournas '25 worked the puck down low behind the Hamilton net to
Audrey McMahon '22 who spotted
Effie Tournas skating in front of the net. McMahon's backhanded pass found Effie's stick and the first-year did the rest, poking one past Gab Venne to cut the deficit down to one.
Even with that goal, Hamilton was quick to respond as Mosher completed her hat trick less than four minutes later that made it 3-1 and Nancy Loh scored just over three minutes later on the power play and suddenly it was 4-1 Continentals.
The same combination that factored on the scoring of the first Wesleyan goal came through again as this time McMahon found
Christina Tournas who found her sister Effie for her second goal of the day, making it 4-2 late in the second.
Despite the flip in momentum after Effie's second goal, the two-goal deficit proved too much to overcome as Hamilton added a fifth goal late off the stick of Allie Curry as the Continentals skated off with a 5-2 win.
Effie Tournas tallied her first career multi-goal game while she leads the Cardinals with eight goals on the season.
Christina Tournas tallied two assists for her second career multi-point game while McMahon now has three assists over her last three games.
Wesleyan looks to rebound on Saturday as the two sides will square off again with first puck drop slated for 3 PM.
