HARTFORD, Conn. - Tonight the Wesleyan women's ice hockey team faced off with the Trinity Bantams. For a majority of the game, it appeared the Cardinals might slide by with a road win, but Trinity tied it up late to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless extra five minutes, the game ended in a 1-1 tie, and Wesleyan (7-12-1, 3-11-1 NESCAC) will face Trinity (9-11-2, 5-9-1 NESCAC) again at home Saturday afternoon (3 PM) for senior night.
With little action in the first period, the Cardinals managed to drum up some excitement in the final three minutes. Effie Tournas '25 carried the puck into the offensive zone, ready to make a play. Following a scrum in front of the net, Brooke Keogh '23 jammed the puck beneath the goaltender's pads to put the Cardinals out in front.
The second period started off with Wesleyan in the lead by 1-0. Deep into the second period, there were a series of penalties for both teams. Trinity and Wesleyan were both at one point whittled down to three skaters each, but no goals were scored. Neither Trinity nor Wesleyan managed to put points on the board in the second period.
Halfway into the third period, Trinity's Jenny Guider took the puck behind the net off the faceoff and tried to sneak it behind Wesleyan goalie Rei Halloran '23, but the junior netminder swept it away. However, Trinity's Paige Kehoe picked up the puck and hurled it back at Halloran, who left a rebound out in front of her crease. Guider then pounced on the rebound, scoring into a wide-open net to tie up the game.
With no more scoring in the third period, Wesleyan hit the ice again for an exhaustive three-on-three overtime. Both teams battled their way through the final five minutes, yet neither came out with a win. Trinity outshot Wesleyan 29-22, and Halloran played another outstanding game, making 28 saves.
