Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. – Back home after spending last week in Florida, the No. 13 ranked Wesleyan men's tennis team opened NESCAC play with a 9-0 win over Trinity on Wednesday evening. The Cardinals (2-2, 1-0 NESCAC) picked up three convincing doubles victories before taking all six singles matches, dropping just one set in singles play.
In the doubles portion, it was a great start for Wesleyan who won at #2 and #3 by identical 8-2 score lines while
Peter Anker '22 and
Ben Mitchell '24 took down Henry Bilicic and Ross DeRose at #1 by a score of 8-5.
Zach Lieb '22 combined with
Harry Portnoy '24 at #2 in an 8-2 win over Dylan Powell and Eduardo Sanchez-Carrion while
Max Lustgarten '25 and
Clay Gaieski '23 combined for a win over Jack Ginter and Pierce Rutledge at #3.
Mitchell set the tone early in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sanchez-Carrion at #3 while Portnoy also dropped just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 over Ginter at #4 to seal the match with the fifth point for Wesleyan in the team scoring.
Looking to add on, Anker finished up his 6-0, 6-4 win at #1 over Bilicic before Lustgarten needed to hold on in the second set for a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Katrik Erodula at #5.
Max Lee '22 took care of Charles Kilborn with a 6-3, 6-3 with at #6 and with all the court convening around #2, it was Lieb who won the third set tiebreak 10-4 over DeRose to capture the 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 win to seal the 9-0 sweep for Wesleyan on the road.
A big match looms as Wesleyan hosts No. 16 Denison on Saturday at 1 PM in a Top 20 showdown at the John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts. This is just the second all-time meeting between the two sides and the first since 1994.
