Women’s Tennis Secures 8-1 Win over Christopher Newport to Begin Spring Break Trip

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The defending national runner-up Wesleyan women's tennis team began their dual match season with an 8-1 win over Christopher Newport on Monday morning from Sanlando Park in Florida. Wesleyan begins the team's annual Spring Break Trip with a 1-0 record while the Captains drop to 1-4 on the season.

The doubles action saw Katie Fleischman '23 and Venia Yeung '22 combine for an 8-1 win over Kiersten Chang and Mia Linam at #3 to open play. After dropping the #1 doubles match, the Cardinals came back with an 8-4 win at #2 thanks to Nika Vesely '25 and Sophie Henderson '22 in a win over Karina Crivtonencu and Amanda Yermal.

Heading into singles play with the 2-1 advantage in team scoring, Wesleyan was thoroughly in command throughout singles play, dropping just one combined set in the six singles matches to roll to the lopsided victory.

Caitlin Goldberg '23 was victorious at #6 in a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ana Clara Borga while Sasha Gaeth '23 was right behind in a 6-4, 6-2 win at #5 over Crivtonencu. Yeung earned the clinching point in the team scoring with a 6-3, 6-4 win at #3 over Chang.

Kriti Williams '24 earned her third career singles dual match victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win at #4 over Linam. More points came from Vesely as the first-year claimed her second win of the day, dropping just three total games in a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Raine Weis at #2. Finally, in the #1 match it was Caitlyn Ferrante '23 who overcame a 6-0 opening set defeat to Tessa Trate, only to come roaring back with a 7-6 (7-4) second set victory that gave her all the momentum she needed to roll to a 10-1 win in the third set tiebreak to make it a perfect 6-for-6 showing from the Cardinals in singles action against the Captains.

Wesleyan continues on with a 3 PM match on Tuesday against RPI at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. RPI is 5-4 on the season but has lost three straight matches including a 7-2 defeat to Haverford today.
