MIDDLETOWN, CT- The Wesleyan softball team played in their first NESCAC game of the season Sunday afternoon, picking up a 4-0 victory over Hamilton. This was a make-up from a game that was supposed to be played on Friday April 1
st. Wesleyan took their first conference game of the year on the back of an incredible pitching performance in the circle by
Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25. Secaira-Cotto pitched a complete game shutout, only allowing four hits with no walks while striking out six. Wesleyan improves to 1-0 in conference play (8-9 overall), while Hamilton drops to 12-6 (1-3 NESCAC).
Â
HIGHLIGHTS:
- After a quiet first inning for both teams, Hamilton threatened to score in the top half of the 2nd inning. Two hits up the middle gave the Continentals runners at 2nd and 3rd with two outs. Secaira-Cotto locked in, striking out her 3rd batter of the game to strand the runners on base
- After another stellar half inning by Secaira-Cotto in the top of the 3rd, Wesleyan went into the bottom half of the inning still tied at zero. The Cardinals bats finally got going, starting with a Revi Brown '23 single that dropped in right field. Sophia Sciarappa '22 followed it up with 2-run double off the right center field fence a few batters later to give the Cards a 2-0 advantage
- Wesleyan added some insurance runs in the 5th, which started once again with a Revi Brown single. Brown advanced to third after Ava Pfannenbecker '25 singled, leading to runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Brown would score on some heads up base running, tagging up on a pop-up to 3rd when no Continental was covering home. Hamilton then intentionally walked the red-hot Sciarappa to get to Secaira-Cotto. She made them pay with an RBI single to help her own cause
- The Cardinals would hold their 4-0 lead the rest of the way, backed by two more shutdown innings from their freshman pitcher who allowed no hits over those final two innings
