MIDDLETOWN, CT- Baseball splits against Amherst Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals made the trip from Amherst, Massachusetts back to Middletown, Connecticut to play the Mammoths for the second and third times this weekend. The first game saw the Cardinals trailing early by a large margin as the Mammoths went out to a 7-0 advantage in just the 2
nd inning. Wesleyan's comeback effort ended up falling short as they only managed six runs over the final five innings to fall 7-6 in the first game of the doubleheader. In the second game both team's bats came out hot, scoring a combined nine first inning runs. The Wesleyan bats never went cold on way to a season-high 20 runs on 14 hits ending in a 20-5 Cardinals win. Wesleyan moves to 9-8 (2-1 NESCAC) while Amherst moves to 5-8 (1-2 NESCAC).
HIGHLIGHTS (7-6 LOSS)
- After a quiet first inning, the Mammoths' offense exploded for seven 2nd inning runs to take an early commanding lead. Amherst did it on eight hits including three extra base hits and a home run
- Wesleyan got two runs back in the bottom half of the 2nd. Ryan Molinari '22 drove in the first on an RBI groundout, followed by a Jimmy Clifford '23 RBI single to right center. The Cardinals capitalized on two Mammoths errors, but stranded two men on base
- Wesleyan added three more runs in the bottom of the 4th to make it a game again at 7-5. Matt Halas '24 came through with a 2-run RBI single to right field to start the scoring for the inning. That was followed by an Adam Geibel '22 double down the right field line which trimmed the deficit to two
- Wesleyan's comeback effort would fall short, however. Kyle Sylvester '22 hit a sacrifice fly to left field in the bottom of the 7th, but that would be the last of the scoring for either side
NOTES:
- Amherst outhit Wesleyan 11-6
- Matt Halas (1-for-4, 2 RBI) is now tied for the team lead with 13 RBI
- Adam Geibel (2-for-4, 2 2B) had his 2nd multi-hit game of the season
HIGHLIGHTS (20-5 WIN)
- The early scoring was a theme today, as Amherst scored four first inning runs to jump out to an early lead. Wesleyan answered with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. The Cardinals managed five runs without recording a single hit
- The teams added some more runs in the 2nd. Amherst tied it in the top half, then Wesleyan added three of their own in the bottom half. Ricky Finkel '23 drove in one of those runs on an RBI single to right field
- Wesleyan added three more runs in the 5th, which was capped off by a Finkel RBI double through the right side to extend the Cardinals lead to seven
- The Cardinals had one more big inning in them in the 6th, putting up seven more runs to really put the game out of reach. They added one more in the 7th to reach a total of 20 runs
NOTES:
- Five Cardinals had multi-hit games
- Most runs in a single game since the 2018 season
- Matt Halas (2-for-3) had a career-high 4 runs
