MIDDLETOWN, CT – No.26 men's tennis was defeated Saturday by No.9 Middlebury, 8-1. Wesleyan was only able to muster one win against their NESCAC counterpart, with
Ben Mitchell '24 taking the victory in singles to avoid the Panthers sweep. Wesleyan moves to 3-5 (2-2 NESCAC) while Middlebury improves to 7-2 (2-1 NESCAC). Wesleyan will look to bounce back in the next four matches which will all be on their home court against NESCAC competition.
Wesleyan was able to get their only win in singles courtesy of
Ben Mitchell. Mitchell took down Noah Laver at #3 7-5, 5-7, 12-11 to give the Cardinals their only victory of the day.
Peter Anker '22 was taken down by Stan Morris 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in #1.
Zach Lieb '22 was defeated by Aiden Harris 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to give the Panthers their second win in #2. To round out singles,
Harry Portnoy '24 lost to Neel Epstein,
Max Lee '22 lost to Zihao Yuang, and
Max Lustgarten '25 lost to Joe Mairs.
In doubles the Cardinals got swept by the Panthers. Anker and Mitchell were defeated by Morris and Vilys 8-6. Lieb and Portnoy were beaten by Laber and Harris 8-2 and Lustgarten and
Clay Gaieski '23 were defeated by Yuan and Mairs.
Wesleyan returns to action Sunday April 3
rd against No.6 Williams in another NESCAC conference match on their home court.
