BRUNSWICK, Me. – The Wesleyan men's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to the hands of No. 9 nationally ranked Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon from the Pickard Tennis Courts.
Ben Mitchell '24 led the Cardinals (5-8, 3-5 NESCAC) with two wins against the national power Bowdoin (14-2, 6-1 NESCAC).
In the doubles portion, Mitchell and
Peter Anker '22 scored an impressive 8-2 victory at #1 over the No. 2 regionally ranked doubles team in the Northeast – Tristan Bradley and Reid Staples. Bowdoin took the remaining two matches as Evan Fortier and Jack Flores pulled out a close 8-6 win at #2 over
Zach Lieb '22 and
Harry Portnoy '24 while Ethan Bradley and Pieter Breuker defeated
Clay Gaieski '23 and
Max Lustgarten '25 by a score of 8-3 at #3.
Mitchell continued his stellar day with his second dominating performance as he took down Fortier 6-1, 6-3 at #3 for his second victory on the afternoon. Anker gave the No. 3 regionally ranked singles player Tristan Bradley everything he could handle at #1, as Anker won the opening set 6-4 before Tristan bounced back with a 6-3 second set win and 10-8 triumph in the super tiebreaker.
The remaining four singles matches all were won by the Polar Bears in straight sets as Bowdoin finished off the 7-2 victory.
Wesleyan is back in action on Sunday at 2 PM with a showdown at No. 24 Colby. The Cardinals are 11-9 all-time against the Mules and have won six straight matches but the two sides haven't faced one another since April 27, 2019.
