Softball Drops Both Games to #8 Eastern Connecticut State

MIDDLETOWN, CT – Softball drops both games of their Friday afternoon doubleheader against #8 ranked Eastern Connecticut State. The nationally ranked Warriors held the Cardinals scoreless in both games with a 7-0 victory in the first contest followed by 5-0 win in the 2nd game. Eastern jumped out to a 1st inning lead in game one and never turned back. In the 2nd game, some stellar early pitching from Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 kept it close but the Warriors' bats got going in the 3rd. They tallied three 3rd inning runs, then held their lead the rest of the way thanks to an incredible pitching performance by Alexis Michon to complete their 2nd shutout of the day.

HIGHLIGHTS (Game 1, 7-0 Loss)
  • Warriors jumped on Cardinals' pitching early, scoring three first inning runs to take an early lead. All-American Brook Matyasovsky ripped a 2-run home run over the left center field fence to cap off the early scoring for ECSU. Wesleyan was able to strand the bases loaded to stop the bleeding
  • The ECSU offense came alive again in the 5th inning, scoring two more runs to extend their lead to five in the middle innings. The Warriors capitalized on a Wesleyan fielding error and two hits of their own to add their insurance runs
  • The Cardinals turned an important double play that stopped what appeared to be the start of a big inning for the Warriors in the top of the 6th. After two people got aboard to start the inning, Darlene De La Cruz '25 took the ground ball right at her, tagged third and threw across the diamond to first for two. ECSU would go on a two-out rally to still manage two runs in the inning
NOTES:
HIGHLIGHTS (Game 2, 5-0 Loss)
  • The Eastern bats got going early again in game two. The Warriors scored the first of their five runs in the game in the 2nd inning. Caroline Biel singled to right center to drive in their first run of the contest. Wesleyan responded with runners on 2nd and 3rd in the bottom half of the inning, but couldn't come through with a run
  • The Warriors added three more runs in the 3rd inning. They scored on four hits, including three extra-base hits (two 2bs, one triple)
  • ECSU added the last of their runs in the 5th inning. They recorded three hits, driving in one to extend their lead to five going into the bottom of the 5th
  • Wesleyan would not record a hit over the final three innings, with Alexis Michon shutting down the Cardinals' bats throughout the day
NOTES:
  • ECSU outhit Wesleyan 11-1
  • Krissy Gately '24 had Wesleyan's only hit of the game, going 1-for-2 with a walk
