HARTFORD, Conn. – Women's soccer was defeated by NESCAC foe Trinity Saturday morning in Hartford by a score of 1-0. Wesleyan looked like the more dominate team on paper, dominating the total shots (20-4) and shots on goal battle (9-2), however the final score was in favor of the Bantams. Trinity was able to net a late first half goal, and that was all they needed to secure a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals. Trinity advances to 4-0-3 (2-0-2 NESCAC) while Wesleyan drops their 2
nd straight NESCAC game to fall to 3-2-1 (1-2 NESCAC).
The Bantams have been a tough matchup for the Cardinals over the years. Trinity has now gone 6-1-1 against the Cardinals over the past eight matchups, with the only Wesleyan win coming last year in a 2-1 battle at Jackson Field.
In Saturday's game, it was another close contest. Wesleyan got off to an aggressive start, getting multiple scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes. The pressure continued when Wesleyan forced a corner, which ultimately led to another shot on goal by
Audrey Lavey '23 who was turned away by the Bantams keeper, Mariana Cournoyer.
Both teams made mass substitutions late in the first half which seemed to spark some life into the Bantams' offense. They quickly produced back-to-back corners over the next eight minutes ultimately leading to the first and only goal of the game. Sadie Rudolph took the second corner which eventually ended up at the feet of Katelyn Charette who beat
Sarah Hammond for her first goal of the season.
The second half saw a handful of chances for the Cardinals to put through the equalizer but the combination of Cournoyer and the Bantams defense was able to keep Wesleyan at bay. The Cards came out aggressive in the second half, producing six shots to Trinity's zero over the first 25 min of the 2
nd frame. Wesleyan managed two more shots on goal in the final 20 minutes but couldn't tie it up.
Sarah Hammond and
Molly Brumbach '26 combined only faced one shot all day which was turned away by Brumbach in the 79
th minute. Trinity's Mariana Cournoyer made nine saves against Wesleyan's offensive attack.
Wesleyan returns to action Sunday, September 25
th where they will be challenged by another NESCAC opponent in Hamilton.
