AUBURN, Mass. – Playing in their third road game in five days, the Wesleyan men's hockey team showed no signs of slowing down as the Cardinals handled Anna Maria in a 5-2 non-conference win on Tuesday night. The Cardinals (7-2-1) continue their impressive start to the campaign, remaining unbeaten in regulation through 10 games. The Amcats (6-9-1) have won only twice in their past seven games.
It was a big night for the Cardinals' top forward line of
Ethan Davidson '26 (two goals, one assist),
Wiggle Kerbrat '23 (one goal, one assist), and
Colin Cobb '23 (two assists) as the trio each finished with multi-point games. Davidson's three-point effort is his first career multi-point game. Kerbrat prolongs his point streak to 11 games while Cobb is the team-leader in assists with nine this season.
DJ Dixon '24 added two points (one goal, one assist) while
Daniel Lurie '26 scored his second career goal in a dominating victory.
Marc Smith '24 got the start in net and posted 28 saves for the second consecutive game, improving to 4-0-1 on the season.
Right from the opening faceoff, the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead just 50 seconds into play. A lofted puck from the Cardinal defensive end was pushed to the end boards and picked up by
Owen Sweet '25 who zipped a cross-ice pass to Dixon. Taking the puck skating backwards, Dixon quickly fired a shot that found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
It was quickly 2-0 Cardinals just under five minutes later on the power play.
Liam Donelan '23 held the puck at the point and passed to Dixon at the left faceoff dot. Dixon's one-timer was blocked in front, but Davidson was there to cash in with the Anna Maria defense scrambling.
Davidson netted his second goal of the night 40 seconds into the second period. With the puck down deep, Cobb sent a cross-ice pass to
Mike Dunderdale '23 at the point. The defenseman had time to line up a wrist shot which was sent in towards Davidson who deflected the low shot up past the left shoulder of Anna Maria's goalie Cole Johnston to make it 3-0 Wesleyan.
The Amcats got on the board less than two minutes later but answered right back just 20 seconds later by another Cardinal goal. Lurie this time finished off a 3-on-2 Cardinal rush with a goal as Kerbrat received a pass heading towards the end boards. Spotting an open Lurie in the slot, Kerbrat's centering pass was spot-on and the one-timer was buried to restore the Cardinals' three-goal lead.
Anna Maria managed to lower the deficit down to two goals with a power play strike from Cam Tobey but another Cardinal goal less than a minute into a period sealed the win in the third. Davidson started the play attracting two defenders on the near side which created space for
Jake Lachance '23 who was teed up for a shot by Davidson. With all sorts of traffic in front, Kerbrat managed to get a stick on a Lachance's high slap shot which deflected in past Johnston to make it 5-2 Cardinals.
Wesleyan plays their first home games of the calendar year this weekend as the Cardinals play host to Bowdoin and Colby.
