Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Sam DeLeo Fires in Late Goal as No. 15 Women’s Hockey Defeats Bowdoin, 1-0

Wesleyan defeats Bowdoin on the road for the first time since 1998

BRUNSWICK, Me.Sam DeLeo '25 broke the deadlock late in the third period to send the No. 15 nationally-ranked Wesleyan women's hockey team past Bowdoin, 1-0, on Friday night in NESCAC play. The Cardinals (9-2-1, 3-2 NESCAC) continue their incredible season in what was their first-ever game played as a ranked team, while the Polar Bears (6-7, 1-6 NESCAC) have lost three straight.

Incredibly, with this win, Wesleyan records their first win over the Polar Bears on the road since 1998, snapping what was a 22-game losing streak against Bowdoin in Brunswick. Since recording just four wins in the first 64 all-time meetings against Bowdoin, Wesleyan has now won three straight games over the Polar Bears since the start of last season.

On what was the Cardinals' fourth power play opportunity of the night, the Tournas twins Christina and Effie cycled the puck back out to the point for DeLeo. With plenty of traffic in front, DeLeo sent the puck towards net and the seeing-eye shot made it through all the bodies in front and past Dani Marquez for the ultimate game-winner.

DeLeo's first goal of the season backed a tremendous outing from goaltender Rei Halloran '23 who made 14 saves in net for her fourth shutout of the season. Playing a Bowdoin side that had been shutout just once previously on the season, Halloran was on her A game early as she denied Allie Britt on a rush up-ice nearly midway through the first. Britt received a cross-ice breakout pass and sped down the left boards beating a Cardinal defender only to be denied with a pad save from Halloran.

After a largely uneventful second period, Halloran again came up big with a denial of Anyi Sun who saw her diving bid at the left post turned aside by Halloran.

In a frantic last few minutes, Bowdoin went on the power play and pulled their goalie to have a 6-on-4 advantage for nearly two full minutes only to see the Cardinal defense not allow a shot on-goal in this span as the game ended in a 1-0 Wesleyan victory.

The two sides will do battle one more time tomorrow with a 3:00 PM start.
