No. 15 Women’s Hockey Suffers 2-0 Setback at Bowdoin

Only 2nd time being shut out this season

BRUNSWICK, ME. – The nationally ranked Wesleyan women's hockey team fell to NESCAC opponent Bowdoin on the road Saturday afternoon, 2-0. It is their first time being shut out since opening night against Connecticut College. The Cardinals fall to 9-3-1 (3-3-1 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears pick up a win to improve to 7-7-0 (2-6-0 NESCAC).

The teams opened up with some strong scoring chances in the early minutes of the first period. Christina Tournas '25 intercepted a pass in the attacking zone, creating a one-on-one chance with the Polar Bear goalie, Dani Marquez. Tournas made her move, but was denied in front of the goal to keep the score even at zero. Bowdoin then had a few chances back on their end, but Rei Halloran '23 was up for the task to keep the game scoreless. After some back and forth, Bowdoin was able to get on the board midway through the period on an Allie Britt score. Peyton Mulhern carried the puck into the attacking zone and got a shot off that was turned away via blocker save by Halloran, but Britt was there for the putback and gave the Polar Bears the lead.

Wesleyan had a power play to end the first period, but only managed one shot on goal that was handled by Marquez. In the 2nd period started with the two teams trading power play chances. Halloran made some key saves over the two minutes, eventually leading to the Cardinals' power play chance. Wesleyan managed two shots on goal, that were both turned away and the game headed into the midway part of second with Bowdoin still up 1-0. That wouldn't last too much longer, as the Polar Bears were back on the scoring attack. Britt did it again for Bowdoin, sniping a wrist shot from the blue line that was able to find the back of the net.

The Cardinals had a handful of shots on goal to end the second period, but couldn't get one past the Polar Bears goalie. In the 3rd period, Wesleyan tried to crank up the offensive pressure with a few quality attempts over the final 20 minutes. As the time continued to tick, Wesleyan found itself on a power play late in the 3rd. Bowdoin had two penalties at the same time, leading to a five on three. Down two with just minutes left, they pulled Halloran as well to make it a six-on-three. The Polar Bears were able to fend off the Cardinals last minute attack to capture the 2-0 victory.

Bowdoin outshot Wesleyan 27-22. This was Wesleyan's first game being shutout since the season opener. Halloran made 25 saves, Marquez finished with 22 of her own.

Wesleyan looks to get back into the win column Tuesday January 17th where they will travel for a non-conference game against the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland.
