Cardinal Sprinters Dominate at the Little Three Championship

Wesleyan wins the 4x400m relay, Grace Devanny '23 posts school record time in the 600m

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Battling against some of the top talent in the nation, the Wesleyan women's track & field team saw a sensational performance turned in by the sprinters as the Cardinals won or finished runner up in the 60m,200m, 600m, and 4x400m relay on Saturday. Wesleyan totaled 75.5 points to finish behind Williams (153) and Amherst (124.5) in the annual showdown between longtime rivals. Racing for the first time in the 2022-23 season, four-time All-American Grace Devanny '23 made waves with a school record time and first place finish in the 600m before combining on the 4x400m relay title-winning run towards the end of the competition. Devanny coasted past the competition in the 600m, finishing more than four seconds faster than the runner-up with a new school record time of 1:36.11.
 
In a thrilling final event, the Cardinals finished the day on a high note as Devanny combined with Sarah Schlosberg '25, Kenzie Kelly '25, and Augusta Burhans '23 to take first place in the 4x400m relay. Burhans started the Cardinal rally in the event in the third leg before handing off to Devanny who did the rest, as Wesleyan moved into first place and ultimately won with a time of 4:04.57.
 
Burhans managed a career-best time earlier in the day in the 60m, as the senior clocked in at 7.93 seconds to take second place. This marked the second time Burhans has run the 60m dash in under eight seconds and the first since her freshman season in 2019-20.
 
Gabby Harris '23 managed a pair of top three finishes in sprint events as she started with a second place showing in the 200m, running in 27.33 seconds. She also landed a new personal-best in the 60m dash, posting 7.96 seconds to claim third place. In the event.
 
Kelly was third-fastest in the 400m, clocking in at 1:01.51 while Schlosberg was third in the 600m, crossing the line in 1:44.49.
 
In the throwing events, Rex Beaver '26 posted a 10.20m in the shot put which was good enough for third place. Emilia Thornton '24 placed third in the weight throw, tossing 10.59m which is a new personal-best.
 
Wesleyan heads to the Ocean Breeze Invite next on Friday, January 20 in Staten Island.
