Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women’s Hockey Drops Game to No. 4 Amherst, 3-1

MIDDLETOWN, CT.- The Wesleyan women's hockey team was defeated Saturday afternoon by the nationally ranked Amherst Mammoths, 3-1. This completes a two-game sweep for the Mammoths who have only lost one game all season. The game played similar to their first matchup on Friday, where the two teams went into the first period scoreless, before exploding for multiple goals in both the 2nd and 3rd period. Wesleyan loses their 4th straight game, falling to 9-6-1 (3-5 NESCAC), while Amherst improves to 16-1 (9-1 NESCAC).

Like last night's contest, the first period was pretty evenly played with both teams having multiple scoring chances before ultimately ending the 20 minutes in a scoreless tie. Wesleyan had two power plays in the opening period of action, managing just one shot on goal that was delt with by Natalie Stott. Amherst had a power play chance of their own, but this time it was the Cardinals' penalty kill that held the Mammoths to one shot and the game went into the second period tied at zero. Amherst managed 10 shots on goal in the opening period to Wesleyan's three.

Amherst opened the second period on another power play, but Wesleyan's penalty kill continued to hold off the Mammoths. Amherst continued to unload shots in the second period, however a combination of blocked shots and Rei Halloran '23 saves kept the game in a scoreless tie heading into the midway point of the period. Amherst finally broke through at the 13:42 mark of the second period with Avery Flynn picking up a loose puck and finding an opening to beat Halloran and give the Mammoths the 1-0 lead. The 4th ranked team in the nation continued to get scoring opportunities, including their 3rd power play of the game, but it looked like it was going to go into the final frame 1-0. That was until Aimee Seppenwolde '26 sniped a shot at the buzzer that found it's way to the back of the net to even the score at one.

The Cardinals could not keep that momentum going in the final period with the Mammoths able to add to their lead early in the third. Leslie Schwartz cleaned up a rebound out in front on a power play in the opening five minutes to add an insurance goal. Less than two minutes later the Mammoths added their third goal of the game to seal the game. Maeve Reynolds was the goal-scorer, cashing in off another rebound chance in front of the goal. Wesleyan picked up the offensive pressure over the final half of the third, eventually pulling their goalie, but could not get another one past Stott and the game ended 3-1.

Mammoths outshot the Cardinals 43-14 in the game. Seppenwolde scored her first goal of her Cardinals career. Halloran made 40 saves on the night. Caroline Jenkins '23 got the assist, her 2nd of the season.
Wesleyan will return to the ice Friday January 27th, where they will travel to New York to take on Hamilton in a weekend double-header.
