#5 Field Hockey Back In NESCAC Tournament, Travels to Face #4 Williams in NESCAC Quarterfinals

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Making their first NESCAC Tournament appearance since 2013, the five-seed Wesleyan field hockey team travels to face four-seed Williams in the quarterfinal round on Saturday. Wesleyan is in search of its first postseason win since 2005 and will do so against their Little 3 rival in the Ephs with play set to begin at Noon. WESLEYAN SCOUTING REPORT
  • Making their 14th all-time appearance in the NESCAC Tournament, the Cardinals are 2-13 all-time in NESCAC Tournament games with the wins coming in quarterfinal games in 2005 and 2002.
  • The Cardinals (9-6, 5-5 NESCAC) are tied for fifth in the NESCAC in scoring, averaging 2.8 goals per game, impressive considering the team has put up the eighth-most shots per game (13) in the league and the 10th-most corners (6.33) per game.
  • Wesleyan sports a winning record both at home (5-3) and on the road (4-3) this season.
  • Of the nine Wesleyan victories this season, four have come against nationally ranked opponents as the Cardinals defeated No. 5 Tufts, No. 11 Bowdoin, No. 14 Trinity, and No. 15 Hamilton throughout the regular season.
  • The signature win came in a 2-1 overtime victory at No. 5 Tufts, which represented the program's first-ever win over a Top 5 ranked opponent on the road and just the second win over a Top 5 ranked program in team history.
CARDINALS TO WATCH
  • The Cardinals have employed the same starting lineup for all 15 regular season games this season.
  • Georgia Adams '26 has been at or near the top of the NESCAC leaderboard in goals and points all season. She heads into NESCAC Tournament play with 15 goals and two assists for 32 points. Adams is tied for third in goals and points in the NESCAC standings. Her 15 goals are the second-highest single-season total in program history and the most since Beth Shilepsky '24 scored 21 back in 1992.
  • Kenzie Mauro '27 (six goals, four assists), Helen Deretchin '25 (five goals, three assists), Annabel Cincotta '25 (four goals, two assists), Kenzie Kelly '25 (two goals, six assists), and Sarah Porter '27 (four goals, two assists) all have at least 10 points this season.
  • Imani Ochieng '25 is tied for sixth in the NESCAC with seven assists.
  • The back line has solidified and become a source of strength for this year's team with Kiernan McColgan '26 leading the way at center back for all 15 games, sporting five defensive saves to her credit this season. Ochieng has been at right back all season, flanked by Anna Broderick '27 on the left.
  • Audrey Pace '26 has been one of the top goalkeepers in the NESCAC all season, sitting third in the NESCAC in save percentage (.766) and second in saves per game (6.53). She is coming off a heroic 14-save effort in the Cardinals' 3-2 shootout win over No. 11 Bowdoin, earning NESCAC Player of the Week and NFHCA Division III National Defensive Player of the Week honors.
WILLIAMS SCOUTING REPORT
  • Currently ranked No. 9 in the NFHCA National Coaches' Poll, Williams is 9-6 overall and 6-4 in NESCAC play heading into the postseason.
  • Williams made a run to the NCAA Tournament semifinal round in 2022, losing to Johns Hopkins 1-0 in the Final Four.
  • All but one of Williams' losses this season have come against Top 10 ranked teams.
  • Williams has scored 49 goals (3.27 per game), sitting with the third-best scoring offense in the NESCAC.
EPHS TO WATCH
  • Williams doesn't employ one dominant offensive weapon, rather the Ephs rely on depth as six players come in with at least 13 points this season.
  • The team-leader in goals is Kiki Higgins as she enters the NESCAC Tournament with eight to go along with four assists for a team-leading 20 points. Molly Hellman has nine assists, the second-most in the NESCAC this season, while she also has four goals for 17 points. Pilar Torres is the team-leader in shots (64) while she has seven goals and three assists for 17 points. Claire Colvin (six goals, four assists), Elizabeth Scarcella (six goals, three assists), and Meaghan Boehm (six goals, one assist) provide great depth scoring for the Ephs.
  • Gates Tenerowicz has played every second in the cage for Williams this season, sporting a .652 save percentage with 45 saves and nine wins to go along with a 1.60 goals-against average. Tenerowicz has allowed two goals or less in 13-of-15 games this season.
SERIES HISTORY
  • The Cardinals are 8-43 all-time against Williams, with a 1-24 all-time record in Williamstown playing the Ephs. Williams has won 10 straight meetings dating back to 2013.
  • The last time Wesleyan defeated Williams was also the only time in program history that the Cardinals have beaten the Ephs in Williamstown, a 3-0 triumph in 2012.
  • Just one goal has decided the last three meetings between the two sides, with Williams winning 3-2 this season and 2-1 the previous two years.
  • These two sides have faced one another twice in the NESCAC Tournament but not since 2003. Williams defeated the Cardinals 3-1 in the quarterfinal round in 2003 and 4-0 in the quarterfinal round in 2001.
2023 REGULAR SEASON MEETING
  • After a scoreless first half, Williams edged out Wesleyan by a 3-2 margin to win the Little Three title on October 14 in Williamstown.
  • Williams outshot the Cardinals 25-9 (14-8 in shots on-goal) in that contest but Pace was at her best, recording 11 saves to keep Wesleyan in the game.
  • Both Cardinal goals were scored via penalty stroke with Deretchin and Mauro both converting their chances.
  • Three different goal scorers led the Ephs with Colvin, Boehm, and Higgins all scoring in the win for Williams.
