No. 14 Volleyball Sweeps Amherst, Capturing Little Three Championship

Cardinals secure their fifth Little Three title in the past six seasons

AMHERST, Mass. – Behind one of the most dominating individual efforts in recent history, the No. 14 ranked Wesleyan volleyball team made quick work of Amherst in a three-set sweep (25-14, 25-22, 25-15) on Saturday afternoon from LeFrak Gymnasium. Coupled with last night's thrilling five-set win at Williams, the Cardinals captured the Little Three Championship for the sixth time in program history and the fifth time in the past six seasons.

Sophia Lindus '26 supplied the heroics as the reigning First Team All-American and NESCAC Player + Rookie of the Year was at her very best on Saturday. The sophomore outside hitter totaled 22 kills with two errors on just 30 attempts, hitting .667 for the match. Those 22 kills are the most by a Cardinal in a three-set match since Lisa Drennan '09 went for 23 against Vassar on Sept. 13, 2008. Lindus added 10 digs, good enough for her fifth double-double of the season and third in the last three matches.

Wesleyan's win moved the Cardinals to 13-1 on the season while the team remains undefeated with a 6-0 record in NESCAC play. The three-set sweep signals just the second time in program history that Wesleyan has swept the Mammoths in Amherst. The only previous time the Cardinals posted a 3-0 sweep in Amherst came back in 2001.

A dominating opening set established the tone for the match as the Cardinals jumped out to an 13-3 lead and never looked back. Lindus smashed eight kills with no errors on 10 attempts in the set while the Mammoths went just 9-for-24 (37 percent) on their sideout opportunities.

The second set was much more competitive, but a 6-1 Cardinal run midway through the set created some separation after the two sides traded points for most of the opening stages. Amherst fought back with a 7-2 run of their own, but it wasn't enough as Bella Ahearn '23 slammed home the set-clinching kill. Lindus had eight more kills and two service aces in the second set.

Amherst couldn't establish any momentum in the third set, with Wesleyan benefitting from a 9-2 run that made it 17-9 Cardinals. The closest Amherst would cut into the lead was a five-point margin as Wesleyan finished the job with a combined block from Mariko Tanaka '24 and Kathryn Morton '24. Wesleyan went 13-for-16 (81 percent) on their sideouts in the third set.

Morton finished the match with seven kills and just one error in 17 attempts, hitting .353. She added three blocks and six digs to her match totals.

Maya Lopansri '25 played well as the primary setter, finishing with 27 assists, two kills, and four digs. Bianca Ortiz '24 racked up 15 digs and two service aces while Elliana Moreno '27 posted 10 digs for her third straight double-digit dig outing.

Wesleyan is back in action at home next weekend, welcoming Connecticut College on Friday night before hosting Bowdoin on Saturday for their final home match of the regular season.
