BRISTOL, R.I. – Opening the season with a solid second place finish out of 12 teams, the Wesleyan wrestling team collected 119 points as nine wrestlers placed at the Roger Williams Invitational. Wesleyan was led by two finalists in
Max Martinez '25 at 141 and
CJ Shea '25 at 157.
RESULTS
The tournament went to Castleton University, currently ranked 11
th in the nation.
Picking up three wins on the day, Shea opened the tournament with a 16-7 major decision over SUNY Cortland's Hunter Hughes before making a quick go of Coast Guard's Landon Kearns 7-0 by decision in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal round Shea toppled Steven Dalling of Stevens with a 14-1 major decision. Shea fell in the finals to Castleton's Nate Camiscioli, 4-2.
Martinez cruised through the first round with a by before matching up with Coast Guard's Vivi Christopoulos in the first of four victories for the junior. Martinez defeated Christopoulos 6-1 by a fall and followed with another fall over Southern Maine's Dominic Pelletier, 3-0. Shane Walczyk of Cortland put up a strong showing but Martinez pulled the 6-4 decision win. Martinez landed another fall in the semifinal round, downing Norwich's Jojo Lotruglio 3-4. Castleton's James Rodriguez picked up the win at 141 with a 17-3 major decision over Martinez.
With two byes on the way to the quarterfinal round,
Aris Dashiell '25 defeated Stevens' Ben Sanders by way of a 5-0 decision for a third-place finish at 184.
Another third-place finish,
Andrew Maiorini '25 sealed three wins on his way to the semifinal round at 165. Maiorini landed a 16-2 major decision over William Pinto of Plymouth and another 8-0 major decision against Norwich's Joshua Ducharne. The quarterfinal saw a 10-4 victory over Bridgewater's Michael Hopkins.
At 174,
Joe Colon '25 was the third Cardinals third-place finish as he picked off three wins of his own. A a relatively easy victory over Johnson and Wales' Dominic Pugliese, 11-6, sent him to Chris Piazza of Stevens for a 16-1 technical fall win with another fall win, 6-1, over James Spellman from Norwich. Colon fell to Desmond McLaughlin 6-3 in the semifinal.
Also competing at 174 was
Marcus Brown '25, finishing fourth, who opened his portion of the tournament a with a 15-0 technical fall over Southern Maine's Jalen Charles. Battle tested in the next bout, Brown managed to fend off Truman Noble of Coast Guard, 16-10. In another close test, Brown fought through for a 12-9 win over Castleton's Caleb Rojas before falling to Roger Williams' Jayden Curley.
Shailen Savur '25, with a fourth-place finish, recorded his first win of the day by way of a 3-0 fall over Stevens' Anthony Bistany. In a 12-7 decision he defeated Coast Guard's Robert Perras before falling to Lotruglio in the quarterfinal.
Finishing fifth at 197 was
Dean Omirly '25 who received a bye but fell to Sean McCullough of Bridgewater.
Rounding the scoring was
Hayden Myers '27 at 141. In his first outing as a Cardinal, Myers tallied two wins after earning a first round bye, defeating Plymouth's Parker Huges in 3-0 fall. In one of the biggest bouts of the day for the Cardinals, Myers recorded an 18-0 technical fall victory over Freedom Excel of Johnson and Wales.
The Cardinals hit the road again on Saturday, Nov. 18, when they head to Springfield for the Doug Parker Invitational beginning at 10 a.m.
