No.10 Colby Holds Off Women’s Hockey, 4-2

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan women's hockey team was defeated for the second straight night by the nationally ranked Colby Mules by a score of 4-2. The Mules opened the game with three straight goals over the course of the first period and a half, before Wesleyan answered with a goal late in the second period. Wesleyan had one goal taken off the board, but responded with another immediately after to trim the deficit to one. The Mules added one more late insurance goal to put the game away at 4-2. Wesleyan drops their 10th straight game to drop to 9-12-1 (3-11 NESCAC). No. 10 Colby wins and improves to 14-6 (9-6 NESCAC).

Wesleyan got out to a better start than yesterday behind some impressive play from Rei Halloran '23. The senior goalie made 11 first period saves including a handful on a Colby power play that kept the game scoreless going into the later minutes of the first period. Colby was able to break a little past midway through the period by virtue of Breanna Studley. Jo Tattersall and Beth Sinson used a long breakout pass and a nice touch to set up Studley with the breakaway where she beat Halloran to go up 1-0.

The second period started with some 4-on-4 play, but there were no goals scored. A few minutes later Wesleyan would go on a power play, but only managed one shot. Colby would get off a flurry of shots at the five minute mark of the period eventually leading to their 2nd goal of the contest. Courtney Shumacher put this one through and Colby had an insurance goal. The Mules came right back with goal number three just three minutes later. This time it was Tate Senden, who redirected a shot off a face-off in front of the goal with over 13 minutes remaining. Wesleyan came back with a much needed score in the final minutes of the second period. After a fight along the boards, Sam DeLeo '25 obtained the puck and delivered a backhanded feed to Brigitte Goeler-Slough '23 in the slot who finished it off for Wesleyan's first goal of the game.

The Cardinals survived a (wo)man down situation in the early minutes of the final period to hold the game at 3-1 going into the homestretch of the 3rd. They would go on a power play chance of their own with seven minutes remaining. The Cardinals would use the power play to score their 2nd goal of the contest, but Dylan Green's 26 tip in score was called back due to high sticking on the deflection. It wouldn't matter as Wesleyan score a minute later off the same power play chance. It was DeLeo setting a teammate up again, this time dishing off to Bridget Cornell '23 who sniped a shot from just inside the blue line to make it 3-2 with 6:19 to play. Colby added one more insurance goal with just over two minutes left to seal the deal of their 4-2 victory.

Wesleyan was outshot 34-16 by Colby on the afternoon. Halloran made 30 saves, her 6th game this season with at least 30 saves. Goeler-Slough scored her 2nd goal of the season, while Cornell secured her 3rd. Four different Cardinals earned an assist on the day.

The Cardinals have two games remaining in the regular season. Their first game will serve as Senior Day, taking place on February 17th against Trinity.
