No. 16 Men’s Tennis Defeats Trinity in Home Opener, 7-2

Wesleyan moved up from 21 to 16 in latest ITA poll

Box Score MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan men's tennis team defeated the Trinity Bantams in the Cards home opener and final game before they lead to Florida for their spring break trip. There spring trip takes place from March 13th to March 17th in Orlando, Florida where they will take on five opponents in five days. The Cardinals moved up five spots to 16th in the latest International Tennis Association (ITA) poll that came out on March 10th. With the win over Trinity, Wesleyan improves to 2-1 (2-1 NESCAC) on the season, all against NESCAC competition. Trinity drops the game, moving to 1-2 (0-2 NESCAC) in the early season.

The Cardinals have rebounded nicely since dropping their season opener to the No. 6 Williams Ephs, 7-2. They have now won their last two matches, both in convincing fashion, taking down the Conn College Camels 9-0, before defeating the Bantams 9-0 today. It was Trinity who came out with energy in this one, taking the first doubles match, before the Cardinals were able to recover by winning the next two to head into singles play with a 2-1 advantage. In singles, Wesleyan took the first five matches before the Bantams were able to salvage the final match to reach the final score of 7-2.

Trinity came out with the opening match victory in doubles, with Henry Bilicic and Jack Ginter defeating JT Bilski '26 and Ben Mitchell '24, 8-1. The Cardinals responded with two straight victories to take a lead going into singles play. First it was Harry Collomb '26 and Chase Kasday '26 continuing their impressive start to the season with a 8-5 victory over Pierce Rutledge and Eduardo Sanchez-Carrion. Then it was Max Lustgarten '25 and Tai MacDonald '26 edging out Enrico Bouro and Brandon Felcher 8-6 to end doubles play.

In singles it was all Cardinals, as Wesleyan took five of the six matches to put away the Bantams. Collomb got things started at #3, topping Bouro 6-2, 6-2. Next was the first-year Kasday, who completed his second W of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kartik Erodula. Mitchell and MacDonald used dominate second sets to put away their competition. Mitchell beat Sanchez-Carrion 6-2 in the first set before dominating the second set 6-0. MacDonald did it in similar fashion, taking down Ginter 6-3, 6-0 for the Cards 4th straight win to open singles play. Wesleyan's 5th and final win of singles came from Lustgarten, who was able to best Felcher 6-3, 6-4. The final match of the day came at #1 with Bilicic able to take down Bilski in a close battle 6-2, 5-7, [10] [8].

Wesleyan will look to build off yet another impressive victory during their spring break trip to Florida. They will compete from the 13th to the 17th with their first match coming against Franklin and Marshall.
