Cardinals open Spring Semester with NESCAC victory

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. – The 3rd ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team continues their regular season dominance with 6-3 victory over No.15 Williams. The Cardinals open the spring semester with a win over nationally ranked Williams to extend their regular season win streak to 29. Wesleyan is now 2-0 (2-0 NESCAC), while Williams will start their 2022-23 season 0-1 (0-1 NESCAC).

The Ephs came out on the attack on their home court, claiming two of the three in doubles to take a lead heading into singles. Wesleyan responded by winning the next six singles matches before the Ephs were able to salvage the final match to get to the final score of 6-3 in favor of the Cardinals.

In doubles Williams showed why they are one of the better teams in the country, taking two of three behind some quality efforts from a number of athletes. The Ephs' Yuu Ishikawa and Katherine Orgielewicz were able to take down Nika Vesely '25 and Leila Epstein '26, 8-2. Caitlyn Ferrante '23 and Sasha Gaeth '23 fell just short in the next match for Wesleyan (8-5) against Jane Ladaga and Ananya Aggarwal. The Cardinals were able to claim one doubles match behind Sarah Youngberg '26 and Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 (8-1) in dominating fashion to head into singles only down 2-1.

In singles, the Cardinals showed why they are one of the top teams in the country. Wesleyan opened with a win by default, claimed by Mohsen-Breen to even the score at two. Next it was Youngberg, who was able to claim a victory over Williams' Ladaga 6-3, 6-3 to give the Cardinals the lead. Epstein kept the momentum going with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mia Thomann to extend the Cards lead to 4-2. The next two matchups were the best of the day. It started with Vesely battling Orgielewicz in a three setter that eventually ended in another Cardinals victory (6-2, 2-6, 6-3). Ishikawa came through in the next match, defeating Ferrante in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) for the Ephs third and final win. Wesleyan's final win came from Kristina Yu '22 who defeated Williams' Aggarwal 6-3, 6-2.

Wesleyan will return to the court tomorrow, March 5th where they will take on another NESCAC opponent in Connecticut College. Matches will begin at 2 pm at Connecticut College in New London.
