MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Baseball bounces back in a big way, securing a 13-4 victory over non-conference opponent, Emerson Thursday night at Dresser Diamond. The Cardinals broke their three-game skid through an offensive explosion at the plate. Wesleyan finished with 13 runs on 16 hits, the 16 hits being the 2
nd most the Cardinals have put together in a single game this season. After trailing 3-0 to open the game, Wes scored 13 of the last 14 runs including a five-run 3
rd, to put the Lions away and end their three-game losing streak. Emerson falls to 14-12 with the loss, while the Cards improve to 10-12 with the victory.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Emerson came out of the gate swinging, capitalizing on a Wesleyan fielding error and a wild pitch to push across the first run of the game in the opening frame. After Wesleyan went down in order in the bottom half, the Lions went right back to work in the 2nd. They put together four hits in the inning, pushing across two more runs and went into the bottom half of the 2nd up three
- The momentum swung into the Cardinals favor in the bottom of the 2nd, starting with an Ernie Little '26 single. Little's single was followed up by a two-run blast over the right field fence by Dylan Judd '22 and Wesleyan had immediately trimmed the deficit to one. The Cards kept the momentum going in the bottom of the 3rd, adding five more runs on four hits. The big hits of the inning came from Judd on a two-run single to right, and a pair of RBI-singles from Jack Carpenter '25 and Connor Sullivan '26 that gave Wesleyan the lead after three, 7-3
- Emerson's Quinton Copeland tried to swing the momentum back the Lions way with a home run to open the 4th, but Patrick Murphy '24 was able to put the next batters away to hold the 7-4 lead. The Cardinals continued to pour on runs over the ensuing innings, with two in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings to take a commanding 13-4 lead into the 8th. Tyler Cosgrove '25 had a pair of big hits during that stretch including an RBI-triple over the center fielder's head in the 7th. Alex Deutsch '25 closed the door in the 9th with three straight strikeouts and Wesleyan came away with the nine-run victory
NOTES:
- Murphy (5 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 4 K's) picked up his 3rd win of the season, while David Tirrell '25 (3 IP, H, 0 ER, 3 K's) and Deutsch (1 IP, 0 ER, 3 K's) came in finished the job over the final four innings
- Judd (4-for-5, HR, 4 RBIs, 3 R) had career-highs in hits and RBIs, to go along with his 3rd home run of the season
- Cosgrove (3-for-4, 3 RBIs, 2 R) secures his 2nd three-hit game of the season, while Little (3-for-4, 3 R) completes his 2nd 3-hit performance in as many days. Little has been on a tear, and is now 15-for-29 (.517) over his last seven games
- Wesleyan finished with 16 hits, the 2nd most they have put together in a game this season. Wesleyan pitching held the Lions to 10 hits
