Baseball Splits Double-Header, Wins Weekend Series Against Amherst

Cardinals take two of three over the weekend

AMHERST, MA. – The Wesleyan baseball team traveled to Massachusetts Saturday for a double-header to complete a three-game weekend series against the Mammoths. The Cardinals came from behind on Friday to take the first game of the series, 8-7. They then went to Mass where they took one of two to claim the best two out of three weekend series against Amherst. The series had big implications, as Wesleyan now stands tied atop the NESCAC West standings at 5-4. Wesleyan is now 12-14 (5-4 NESCAC), while Amherst moves to 16-10-1 (5-4 NESCAC).

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (8-4 LOSS)
  • The scoring started early in this one with each team getting on the board in the opening inning. The Cardinals got it going in the top half, starting with a James Marsden '26 single into right field. Marsden worked his way to 3rd on a stolen base and error before being driven in via a sacrifice fly by Kyle Sylvester '22. Amherst came back with two in their half of the first, putting together two runs on four hits to take the lead at 2-1. They would add three more in the 2nd on a pair of hit by pitches and base knocks and led 5-1 heading into the 3rd
  • Tyler Cosgrove '25 lifted one up and over the fence to open the 4th and Wesleyan cut into the lead at 5-2. The Mammoths were quick to answer with a home run of their own in the bottom half. They added one more in the 5th and managed their lead back out to 7-2 heading into the 6th
  • The Cardinals continued to try to scrap their way back into this one, but the Mammoths seemed to always have the answer. After plating one in the 6th on an RBI-groundout, Amherst returned with one in the bottom half. Wesleyan had one more opportunity in the 7th, opening the inning with hits by Luke LaSaracina '25 and Evan Diaz '25 to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. After a popout, Marsden came through with a RBI-single up the middle and the deficit was down to four with two runners on. Amherst was able to retire the next two batters however, giving the Mammoths a game one victory

NOTES:
  • Marsden (2-for-4, R, RBI) continues his hot stretch, now recording a hit in all 10 games he has had a plate appearance. Cosgrove (2-for-4, HR, 2 R, RBI) joins him with two hits, recording his 1st home run of the season
  • Amherst outhit the Cardinals 11-9

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (6-2 WIN)
  • The offenses threatened again in the 1st inning of game number two. Wesleyan opened with a Marsden hit by pitch followed by a Cosgrove double and had two runners in scoring position with nobody out to open the game. They were not able to convert however, and Amherst came to bat and went to work. Jack McDermott sent one over the fence and Amherst held a 1-0 lead after one. The Cardinals fought back in the next half inning, plating two on a 2-run triple by Cole Torino '24 and took their first lead of the contest at 2-1
  • AJ Karabenick '24 settled down, holding the Mammoths without a run over the next five innings of play. The Wesleyan offense was able to give him another insurance run during that span. In the 5th, LaSaracina drove in Sylvester on an RBI-single who had singled earlier in the inning and Wesleyan extended their lead to 3-1 through five innings of play
  • The Wesleyan offense found more runs in the 7th. Diaz singled up the middle to drive in two, that was quickly followed by another RBI-hit from Jimmy Clifford '23 to drive in Diaz and put the Wesleyan lead up to 6-1. Amherst answered with one in the bottom of the 7th, but Karabenick managed to work his way out of the inning with minimal damage. David Tirrell '25 came in for the 9th and shut the door to finish off the victory for the Cards
