Box Score 2 MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan softball team dropped both games of their double-header against NESCAC opponent Amherst Wednesday afternoon at The Softball Field. The Cardinals fell behind 3-0 in game one, but fought their way back into it. They managed to get the tying run to first base in the bottom of the 7th, but could not push her across and ultimately fell by three runs. In game two they came out with some offensive pop, jumping out to a 5-0 lead heading into the top of the 5
th. The Mammoths responded, scoring six unanswered over the final three innings to complete the come-from-behind victory. Amherst improves to 23-11 (11-5 NESCAC), while the Cardinals drop to 11-19 (1-11 NESCAC).
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (5-2 LOSS)
- After a fast first inning of action, the Mammoths got on the board to open the 2nd. Two straight doubles, followed by a two-run single to center field gave Amherst an early 2-0 advantage. The Mammoths built off of that momentum in the 3rd, adding another insurance run on yet another single to center field
- Wesleyan came back with their first run of the game in the bottom half, started by a Krissy Gately '24 double over the right fielder's head. Gately worked her way around the bases, eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly from Hannah Docktor '24 to cut the Mammoths lead to 3-1. Amherst immediately answered with three hits in the next half inning, eventually bringing home one to retake their three-run lead at 4-1
- The Mammoths added one more in the 6th and Wesleyan found themselves down four and down to their final three outs. Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 got the inning started with a single, followed by a Brooklin Williams '23 walk. After two straight outs, the Cards were down to their final out. Darlene De La Cruz '25 kept the game alive with an RBI-single making the score 5-2, but a strikeout would ultimately end the game, stranding the tying run on first base
NOTES:
- Despite being outhit 15-3, the Cardinals had a chance to win the game, stranding the tying run on first
- Gately (1-for-3, R) had the Cardinals only extra base hit with a double in the 3rd
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (6-5 LOSS)
- Williams came into the circle locked in to start game two, putting the Mammoths down in order in the opening frame. She would hold them without a run again in the 2nd, bringing up the Cards in the bottom half. Wesleyan used that momentum to score their first run of the game. Secaira-Cotto and Williams opened with back-to-back singles, but the next two batter were retired bringing up Gately. The sophomore outfielder delivered with an RBI-single to score Secaira-Cotto and Wesleyan led 1-0
- The Cardinals continued to built their lead in the 3rd, putting together three more runs on three hits to push the advantage to 4-0. They didn't stop in the 4th, adding one more to try to build a comfortable lead heading into the final four innings of play. Secaira-Cotto continued her impressive day with an RBI-single to center and Wes led 5-0 going into the 5th
- The Mammoths came storming back in the final three innings of play. They managed two in the 5th and three in the 6th to tie the game up going into the final frame. Amherst used two singles in the top of the 7th to take their first lead of the game at 6-5. Wesleyan had one final chance in the bottom half, however they went down in order and the Mammoths took game two
NOTES:
- Williams (5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER) pitched four scoreless innings before running into some trouble in the fifth and sixth innings
- Docktor (2-for-4) and Secaira-Cotto (2-for-4, R, 2 RBIs) were the two Cardinals with multiple hit games. With her two hits in game two, Docktor now leads the team in total hits with 29 in 30 games
- Amherst outhit the Cards 9-8
