MIDDLEBURY, VT. – The Wesleyan baseball team took one of two on the second day of their road trip up to Middlebury, Vermont Saturday afternoon. The Cards secured their second straight win over the Panthers in as many days to open up Saturday, before an offensive explosion from Middlebury allowed them to take game three of the series. The Panthers pitching held the Cardinals without a run through five innings to build a 3-0 lead heading into the 6
th. The Cardinals then scored five unanswered runs in the last two innings, one in the 6
th and four in the 7
th, to capture the come-from-behind victory over their NESCAC foe, 5-3. In game number two, the Panthers exploded for 23 runs in a 21-run rout of the Cards to force a split on the day. Middlebury moves to 12-6 (1-2 NESCAC), while the Cards finish the day 9-10 (3-3 NESCAC).
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (5-3 WIN):
- Both teams threatened in the opening two innings, getting men on base, but could not get one across and the game moved into the 3rd inning tied at zero. In the 3rd, Middlebury struck first scoring one run on a Beau Root double that broke the scoreless tie heading into the 4th
- Root continued his good start to the day at the plate in the 5th with another RBI-hit, this time a triple down the right field line and the Panthers came out of the 5th with a 3-0 lead. Wesleyan would come back with a run of their own in the next half inning. Kyle Sylvester '22 ripped a double to left center following a Christian Boudreau '25 walk, and the Cards had runners on 2nd and third with two outs. A wild pitch scored Boudreau and Wesleyan trimmed the deficit to 3-1
- Down to their final three outs of the game and down two runs, the bats came through for Wesleyan. After a walk and a fielder's choice, Ethan Diaz '25 lifted a blast to center field that cleared the fence and evened the game at three. The Cardinals weren't done there, adding two more on an Ernie Little '26 RBI-infield single and an RBI-walk by Dylan Judd '22 to take their first lead of the game at 5-3. Ian Appleby '24 came in for the save and retired the Panthers to secure the 5-3 victory
NOTES:
- Alex Deutsch '25 (6 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 3 K's) picked up his 2nd win of the season, while Appleby (1 IP, H, 0 ER) came through with Wesleyan's first save of the year
- Diaz (2-for-3, HR, R, 2 RBIs) was the hero for the Cardinals, lifting the game-tying home run in the 7th inning, his 1st of the season
- Sylvester (1-for-3, 2B) has now hit safely in 17 of 18 games
- Middlebury outhit the Cardinals 9-5
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (23-2 LOSS):
- Wesleyan got out to an early lead, with a Little single sandwiched between two walks loaded the bases before a wild pitch gave Wesleyan a 1-0 lead. Middlebury came back with two of their own in the bottom half on four hits. They continued to keep the bats hot in the 2nd and 3rd, combing to score nine more runs and really brake the game open at 11-0 heading into the 4th
- The middle-innings were more of the same for the Panthers at the plate, delivering five runs in the 4th, two in the 5th, and five more in the 6th to really open the game up at 23-1 heading into the final three innings of play. Wesleyan had chances, leaving runners on in each of those three innings, including stranding two on in the 5th
- The Panthers offense finally slowed down in the 7th and 8th innings, as Wesleyan pitching was able to hold them without a run. The Cardinals added their 2nd run of the game in the final frame. James Marsden '26 delivered a double, eventually followed by a Connor Sullivan '26 RBI-single to reach the final score of 23-2
NOTES:
- The freshman duo of Marsden (2-for-3 R) and Sullivan (2-for-2, RBI) led the way for the Wesleyan offense, as Marsden's two hits served as a career-high
- The teams combined to use 17 pitchers, with the Cardinals using 12 different arms
- Middlebury's 21 hits and 23 runs both serve as the most the Cardinals have given up this season
