Lai and Trotta Named IWLCA All-Americans

Both Lai and Trotta named Second Team All-Americans

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Wesleyan women's lacrosse team saw two members - Olivia Lai '23 and Erin Trotta '23 - named Second Team All-Americans, as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) on Wednesday afternoon. Lai earns her second career All-American honor while Trotta makes the list for the first time in her career.

Lai is the sixth Cardinal in program history (all since 2017) to earn multiple All-American honors as she was named to the First Team in 2022. Trotta becomes just the third Cardinal defender in team history to earn All-American honors, joining Indigo Pellegrini de Paur '21 and Caroline Sgaglione '19. This marks the sixth straight season that Wesleyan has had multiple players earn All-American laurels dating back to the 2018 season.

Named to the All-Region and All-NESCAC First Teams, Lai is quickly shooting up the career record list at Wesleyan as she has 106 goals in just two full seasons, ranking fifth all-time in team history. She produced 47 points (42 goals, five assists) in 19 games (all starts) in 2023. Lai led the team in free position goals (21), shots (30) and shooting percentage (.700) on those attempts. Her prowess in transition defense also led to 18 caused turnovers, tied for fourth-most on the team while she led the Cardinal attack in that category. Lai produced nine hat tricks in 2023 and went for 4+ goals five times.

A defensive force each of the last two seasons, Trotta has produced the top two single-season team records in caused turnovers the past two years. After first breaking the single-season program record with 37 in 2022, Trotta did one better and recorded 38 in 2023. She also produced 46 ground balls to establish another personal single-season record. The senior defender started 38 consecutive games and finishes her career second all-time at Wesleyan with 77 caused turnovers, impressive considering her totals came in just 41 games and two seasons as a starter. Ultra consistent throughout the season, Trotta had eight games with 3+ caused turnovers and nine with 3+ ground balls.
