Wrestling Takes 10th Place at the Will Abele Invite

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Wesleyan wrestling team traveled to Ursinus College on Saturday for the Will Abele Invite. On the backs of five Cardinals who placed in their respective weight classes, Wesleyan placed 10th out of 17 teams in the tournament style event. Among the Cardinals who placed, Aris Dashiell '25 had the most wins as he went 6-1 on the day to take fifth place in the 184 lb bracket. Andrew Maiorini '25 went 5-2 to finish sixth at 165 while Lennon Soaper '27 also went 5-2 with four pins on the day, taking seventh place at 184. Dario Molina '24 and Ike Guttentag '26 each picked up four wins, as Dario placed eighth in 165 while Guttentag finished seventh at 149.
 
Competing as the #6 seed in 184, Dashiell got off to a great start with a 17-3 major decision win but fell in the next round by pinfall. Competing in the consolation flight, Dashiell rolled with five straight wins to finish the day in fifth place, starting his run with a 10-4 decision victory before a 11-3 major decision win and 22-6 tech fall victory. Reaching the fifth-place bout after a forfeit win, Dashiell handled the #7 seed Jake Gerish of TCNJ in a 6-3 decision victory.
 
Maiorini opened the competition with a near-perfect start, rattling off three straight tech fall wins including a 17-0 margin in the round of 64 followed by a 16-0 win in the round of 32 before an 18-1 win in the round of 16. His run came to an end in the quarterfinal round of the main flight, but Maiorini managed a 11-3 major decision win over the #6 seed Nick Stump before falling in the fifth-place bout in a 4-1 decision defeat.
 
Soaper impressed with five straight wins in the consolation flight, four of which coming via pinfall. He pinned his opponent in 52 seconds in the first round of the consolation bracket, followed by a pin in 1:00 and another pin in 53 seconds. Advancing to the seventh-place bout, Soaper finished in style as he recorded another pinfall win, getting a tap from the referee in 4:10 against the #8 seed Dave Giulian of TCNJ.
 
Molina advanced to the quarterfinal round of the main flight in the 165 bracket before falling to the top-seed Shawn Marchesano of Ursinus. Guttentag won twice in the 149 main flight before suffering a 10-4 defeat to top-seed Michael Conklin of TCNJ. He battled back with a pinfall win over the five-seed in the consolation flight before earning a 18-2 tech fall win in the seventh-place bout.
 
Chris Hong '27 picked up two wins in the 125 main flight, CJ Shea '25 earned three straight wins in the consolation flight at 157, Roman Martinez '27 won twice in the 174 consolation bracket and Dean Omirly '25 recorded two straight pinfall wins in the 197 consolation flight.
 
Next up for the Cardinals is a return to dual match action as the Cardinals head to the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Championships on Saturday, January 21 in Providence, Rhode Island.
