Felicia Fongemie '27 and
Alli Jones '27 showed out in a big way, leading the Wesleyan women's basketball team to a resounding 68-50 victory from Silloway Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Cardinals (9-4, 1-1 NESCAC) improve to 5-1 in their past six games while the Camels (5-11, 0-4 NESCAC) have lost four straight.
Fongemie poured in a game-high 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting and 3-of-5 from three to go along with five rebounds and four assists with no turnovers in 32 minutes.
Alli Jones put forth a record-setting performance in her first career start, setting a new Wesleyan first-year record with 20 rebounds to go along with 12 points for her first career double-double. The last Cardinal to grab 20+ rebounds in a game was Katy O'Connor '21 on February 7, 2020 against Williams.
After playing to a 14-13 lead after the first quarter, game opened up in the second as the Cardinals outscored the Camels 22-10 to take a 36-23 lead into halftime. Wesleyan shot 50 percent in the quarter compared to just 15.8 percent (3-19 FG) for Conn. It was 22-17 in favor of Wesleyan before a 10-0 scoring run in the span of just 2:35 stretched the margin to 15 points in favor of the Cardinals.
Alana Jones '24 started the run with the first five points and
Olivia Quinn '26 hit a three to make it 32-17.
It was more of the same in the third quarter as Wesleyan held the Camels to just nine points on 4-of-19 shooting (21.1 percent) as the Cardinals overcame nine turnovers in the frame to still outscore Conn. 13-9 and lead by 17 heading into the fourth. The Cardinals took their biggest lead of the game at 61-37 with 5:07 remaining as Quinn hit her third triple of the game before the Camels finished strong with an 8-0 run in the closing minutes before the game ended in a 68-50 decision in favor of the Cardinals.
Wesleyan shot 45 percent as a team from three, going 9-for-20 for the game, with Fongemie and Quinn both hitting three from beyond the arc. The Cardinals held Conn. to just 25 percent shooting (17-68 FG) for the game and were +9 in the rebounding battle (48-39). Wesleyan also dominated in fast break points (22-8) and points in the paint (30-14).
Quinn overcame early foul trouble to finish with a strong all-around performance with 15 points (3-5 3FG), six rebounds, and four assists in just 23 minutes.
Alana Jones contributed nine points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals while
Kate King '27 tallied six rebounds and five assists off the bench.
The Cardinals have a difficult matchup on Tuesday in a quick turnaround as Wesleyan heads on the road for a 2 PM tip-off against a Bowdoin team that is riding a 12-game win streak and is currently ranked No. 15 in the nation.
