Women’s Hockey Rings in New Year with a Pair of Goals in 2-2 Draw with Conn.

NEW LONDON, CT. – A pair of late goals by Amelia Molin '27 and Christina Tournas '25 propelled the Wesleyan women's ice hockey team to a 2-2 overtime draw with Connecticut College to ring in 2024 on Tuesday, Jan. 2, from Conn.'s Dayton Arena.

The first game of 2024 for the Cardinals (4-3-1 overall, 1-1-0 NESCAC) started with an early setback in the first period after what looked like a promising power play opportunity just under two minutes of play. The Camels (5-3-2 overall) managed to get two shots off on Rei Halloran '23 before being called for the minor penalty. The Cardinals were unable to capitalize on the man advantage despite a flurry of action around the goal from Dylan Green '26 and Sam DeLeo '25 who combined for six shots on Camels goaltender Devon Galizio. Awarded the man advantage at the with 12 minutes remaining in the first period, the Camels made good with their first of two power play goals at 11:09. The Camels were awarded another power play immediately after the first goal and scored off the face-off to take a 2-0 lead.

Both teams were held scoreless through the second bout of 20 minutes, the Camels continuing to control the pace of the game despite the offensive push back from the Cardinals. The Cardinals held the power from the face-off, winning nine draws to the Camels' six through the second period while putting the pressure in the Camels' zone on two power play opportunities. On the final 5-on-4 chance of the period the Cardinals saw a dominant press for a goal from DeLeo and Green.

It was Molin who finally split the score 67 seconds into the third period, getting the Cardinals on the board to change the pace for the remainder of the game. Mairead Kennedy wrangled the puck in the Camels zone to keep possession after Aimee Seppenwolde '26 took an initial wide shot on goal from out at the blue line. After several seconds of a growing crowd hacking at the puck, the Camels knocked the puck between Galizio's pads deep enough that Molin was able to tuck it over the line from the left post.

Tournas tied the game up at two with 7:54 remaining in regulation from the face-off. Molin won the draw, beating Charlotte Harris and sent the puck back to the center of the Camels' zone to Brigitte Goeler-Slough '23. Goeler-Slough's wrist shot hit the cross bar and deflected the puck behind Galizio for Tournas to clean up and over the goal line. With both teams unable to produce a game-winning goal in regulation, the game went to overtime before ending in a NESCAC draw.

Goeler-Slough led the team with five shots on goal. Molin and Jenna Rekoske '24 won eight draws on the afternoon.

In goal, Halloran made 27 saves through 65 minutes of playing time. Galizio made 26 saves for the Camels.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Jan. 5, when they travel to Williams College for a 7 p.m. NESCAC puck drop.
